Question about terminology

Hi guys.

I just got my MPx200 yesterday, and so I'm now plunging into the world of smartphone software, and I've ran into some terminology that I"m a bit confused as to whether its refering to mine or not.

Stuff like SPV, MIPS, ARM, etc. I'm just confused as to which my phone is, as stuff is rarely categorized as simply "Smartphone".

Also, are there differences between the smart phones as far as some will run some programs and some won't? Thanks.

Is there any type of beginner's guide to third party apps on a smartphone? For example one thing I keep hearing about is unlocking the phone to allow for third party apps to run, but I've got a number of software already and haven't had to do this, and I'm just wondering why.

Thanks for any help you can give!

well the reason why U haven't had to app unlock the phone is that the version released on ATTWS in the states wasn't application locked to start with... app locking seems to be pretty exclusively done by Orange here in Europe...

As for the teminology... SPV, this refers to the first smartphone made available by Orange in Europe 12 months ago and basically stands for Sound, Pictures, Video and ARM is the architecture of the processor used in current smartphones...

Currently yes there are differences in smartphones which could restrict the software running... this is the use of the SmartPhone2002 platform or the newer Windows Mobile 2003 platform which is based on .net cf technology and whilst it should be possible for software written for the SP2002, (MPx200), platform to run on WM2k3 it does not swing the other way and software written for WM2k3 in .net will not run on SP2002

Hope this helps a little :)

Thanks! So, am I correct in assuming that anything written for ARM will work on the smartphone? And anything with SPV?

What about MIPS, that a different architecture?

Thanks again, you've cleared up a whole lot of questions I had. :)

Yeah that's about right... the SPV used SP2002 platform so pretty much anything that worked for that should work on all SP2002 equipped devices... and right again MIPS is a different architecture, (short for Million Insturctions Per Second), and yep the MPx, SPV & SPV E100 all use ARM micro's and run SP2002 :)
