Guest dshaugney Posted December 22, 2003 Report Posted December 22, 2003 I got the MPX200 on Orange Square Deal not too long ago and the sales rep was trying to sell me insurance, which I declined. I know that the handset is covered by warranty and should it develop any faults that are being mentioned I should be able to return it where it came from to get a replacement or get it fixed. After all they sold me a sub-standard product in the first place. Would I be able to do that or am I screwed without insurance? I know I can sign up whenever I want to but I'm a student and I don't have much money to throw about. _____________________________________ 12 Month Manufacturer Warranty All phones are covered by the 12 month manufacturer Warranty. Guest deanrh Posted December 22, 2003 Report Posted December 22, 2003 ive had insurance on my phone since ive been on orange, and i reckon its definately worth it, just incase u break it or it goes wrong. there is £15 each time u claim though. still a good deal though.
Guest dshaugney Posted December 22, 2003 Report Posted December 22, 2003 you see that's my argument... if it goes wrong (by itself without my help) that's covered by manufacturer's warranty. I do agree with you that you never know - you could break it and that's when insurance is usefull...but I really feel they're making their money from it.
Guest sponge Posted December 22, 2003 Report Posted December 22, 2003 Do you have home contents insurance? Or are on your parent's (you say you are a student) insurance? Because my phone is covered for accidental damage/loss on my home insurance policy. As for breakdowns - a warranty is in addition to your statutory rights under the sale of goods act. So even without a warranty, you still have the right to a repair/replacement.
Guest dshaugney Posted December 22, 2003 Report Posted December 22, 2003 nada on home contents insurance. by the way thank you for that little gold nugget regarding rights.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted December 23, 2003 Report Posted December 23, 2003 The advantage with Orange care is that you get a replacement in normally 24 hours, otherwise if you use the warranty approach you may me without the phone for around two weeks while it's getting repaired. Care (for me) is a bloody good service.
Guest morpheus2702 Posted December 23, 2003 Report Posted December 23, 2003 Definitely get it. Sure you could argue about who has liability for what, but by the time that is sorted, you are likely to have been without a phone for weeks.
Guest chucky.egg Posted December 23, 2003 Report Posted December 23, 2003 Dont forget that its for a year, and the only way out of it is to end your network contract. If you change phones a lot (like me) then you end up paying insurance for a phone you don't have! I've only ever needed it once, and the service was fine, but I've paid about £180 over 3 years for it. That's about half the sim-free price for a decent handset. In a way I suppose it comes down to how much confidence you have in your SPV/moto... On the whole I say "skip it" and save your money
Guest pisquee Posted December 23, 2003 Report Posted December 23, 2003 If you change phones (i.e. upgrade) then the insurance passes onto the new phone.
Guest rogerbates Posted December 27, 2003 Report Posted December 27, 2003 Personally I wouldn't bother with it, it is just more money to pay out every month and like someone said if you do claim you have to pay £15 on top of the £5 a month that you have already paid. I was in the same situation (a student) and just decided to be careful with my phone, it survived. Are you sure that you are not on your parents insurance? Most insurance policies these days include some kind of student living away from home bit. I had my phone replaced within 24 hours after it stopped working just from the Warranty and you are much more likely to have some kind of technical fault (at least with the SPV, not sure about the MPX200) than drop it in the toilet or something. Of course if it does get damaged or stolen or something then you are going to have to buy another phone, but with Orange Care you are going to have to pay £70+ whether it does or not.
Guest kevlar Posted December 28, 2003 Report Posted December 28, 2003 My Daughter lost her brand new Nokia 6100 last year and we had no insurance. After checking the orange website and contacting them I was given 2 options,1) pay £70 for a new handset or 2) pay £30 for a handset and subscribe to orange insurance for 1 year. We took option 2 but it struck me what a good deal this is, and what a waste of time the insurance would be. Option 1 gets you a new handset and costs you only £10 more than the cost of a years insurance. Option 2 gets you the handset and 1 yr ins for £90. Although we lost out, I think the gamble is well worth while, when you think most people would probably never make a claim anyway. The above costing info has now been removed from their website, it now just says to contact orange to discuss the options. They may have put their prices up, or they may have just realised that putting them up on a webpage was losing them insurance sales. Kevlar
Guest schildy Posted December 30, 2003 Report Posted December 30, 2003 I have been with Orange for around 7-8 years. Upgraded virtually every year as well, primarily for the care, and here is why. I have run over one phone, had 2 stolen from under my nose, lost another. Each time, Orange have replaced without batting an eyelid. Only thing I had to do was provide crime reference numbers on the phones that were nicked. So I get a new phone (usually at great reduction also), insurance, and the support of a pretty good network. I've seen a lot of gripes on this site about OCS, I have to reply that I have never experienced that. Somewhere down the line the cost I pay for phones could be cheaper, sure, but if today's call to OCS and the help I got was anything to go by, I willbe there for a long time yet.

Guest schildy Posted December 30, 2003 Report Posted December 30, 2003 It isn't necessarily defence. I am more than certain that anybody on this or any other forum is quick enough to bitch about something when it goes wrong, and yet don't have the balls to hand out a bit of praise when it is due. In my case I can't moan, in yours, who knows, you obviously play the game and work it to your adavantage...your perogative. As for anyone losing a phone being stupid. Hmmm!
Guest HurricaneDave Posted December 30, 2003 Report Posted December 30, 2003 "ok calling people who lose there phones stupid is a bit harsh" :D But if you have a phone like a spv or mpx etc etc etc then you only need half a brain to tell you to guard it with your life...the majoruty of people who lose there phones do so by leaving them laying about!! silly thing to do really :) if you are carefull and sensible there is no reason why you should ever lose a phone!! as for getting your phone stolen i accept that is an unfortunate and certainly not your fault so sorry if that offended!! yes you are correct it is my perogotive to bitch about ocs as it is yours to give them praise when its due..my point bieng that over the last 5 years i have had a hell of a lot of phones and have phone ocs on many a occasion and genuinly cannot think of any 1 single time where they where directly helpfull to my problem.. especially where smartphones are concerned it would seem that the ocs staff (or at least the majority of them) dont know there arse from there elbow as proof of this when i rung ocs a couple of weeks ago to change my gprs bundle,, i was asked what phone i had..so i told her only to be told that "are you sure sir?" as far as i am aware the e100 isnt publicly available yet??? :!: :!: so just remember when you hand over your hard earned that these people are supposed to help you? how can they help you when they dont even know what the hell they are talking about?? but i am a fair person and WILL praise orange where praise is due and right now i am fairly happy with orange as i have just ordered an mpx200 from the orange shop online and built my own tarriff (square deal i think?) its pretty cheap and IMO is a VERY good service so well done to orange for that but ocs still suk
Guest Chaser Posted December 30, 2003 Report Posted December 30, 2003 I work in a mobile phone shop and we sell our own insurance policy rather than Orange Care. I have to say its probably as least as good and cheaper, but the claims process takes a little longer so for my own SPV e200 I have Orange Care cause of the next day thing. Cant be doing without my phone. I have to say though when I offer insurance and the customer declines, it is their choice, but when they come back a couple of months later with a broken phone, you cant help but feel vindicated. I accept that its not going to happen to everyone, but accidents happen, and thats a fact. I believe insurance is worth it. Just my two cents.

Guest Chaser Posted December 30, 2003 Report Posted December 30, 2003 By broken read "Smashed to Buggery" or "I dropped it in my pint", so as such, no they would not be covered by the warranty.
Guest HurricaneDave Posted December 30, 2003 Report Posted December 30, 2003 By broken read "Smashed to Buggery" or "I dropped it in my pint", so as such, no they would not be covered by the warranty. :) :D but broken means that it no longer works it doesnt mean you dropped it in you pint but  :) :(
Guest schildy Posted December 30, 2003 Report Posted December 30, 2003 We could go all night on this but I think we both agree with each other on some points. The losing a phone, to be fair was a point where I say I lost it but really believe that it was "borrowed"by one of my son's mates. Luckily it wasn't an SP, that WAS nicked literally from under my nose, because I had broken the previous one by sitting on it. (Now THAT IS stupid, I admit) Customer services? how many different environments where "customer service" is offered have you ever had a resolutionto your problem that you have been immediately happy with, and along with that had even an iota of faith in the person you have just spent the best part of your day "discussing" the problem? I don't consider mysel super smart (as in rocket scientist) but I am far from daft, and do have an idea about things I talk about. If I don't know I won't try to make things up. But from ASDA to PC World, they all tell you want their bosses want you to hear, even if it is wrong, and it mostly is. I lucked out, especially today, beecause the girl that helped me, I would have quite easily married, she was that helpful. Like you I sorted out my whole package and it is what I want. If you ever want to try a really good (not) customer service, join 3 and speak to one of their rep's...that is a nightmare, trust me, and when you think that they actually own Orange, we are talking chalk and cheese. I'll get off my soap box now, probably should have PM this and will get roasted by the mods, so sorry for taking up valuable space. Take it easy TDave and keep in touch mate. I'm still learning this SPV stuff, and getting my new E200 will only help me to get better. Roll on Friday. :) :D
Guest HurricaneDave Posted December 30, 2003 Report Posted December 30, 2003 hehe :D hope you enjoy the e200 mate :)
Guest pisquee Posted December 30, 2003 Report Posted December 30, 2003 > If you ever want to try a really good (not) customer service, join 3 and speak to one of their rep's... > that is a nightmare, trust me, and when you think that they actually own Orange, we are talking chalk and cheese Orange is owned by France Telecom 3 is owned by Hutchinson (Orange originally was a part of Hutchinson - but that was a LONG time ago.)
Guest schildy Posted December 30, 2003 Report Posted December 30, 2003 Must have read it wrong somewhere, hey ho! Maybe that is why O are so much better then? The main point was that by comparison Orange are actually pretty good(my opinion) others beg to differ, that is why life is interesting...don't ya think. :)
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted December 30, 2003 Report Posted December 30, 2003 I think ANY company would have to go a hell of a way to provide CS worse than that of 3's :) (Pipex maybe...) As for insurance, i have the 4 year jobbie from the link. It works out cheaper than Orange Care, and i have spare Smartphones were the worse ever to happen...
Guest schildy Posted December 30, 2003 Report Posted December 30, 2003 I'm getting there Mono. 2 SPV's and the E200 on the way. Just need to get into serious stuff (homescreens etc) and maybe ... Orange just seem to work for me, never failed to come up with the goods.Tried 3 but bitterly disappointed. Phone sits in it's cradle looking for someone to love it. I will stick with SPV's for a while yet
