What is the 'Cell Broadcast/SIM Toolkit Plug-In" (from Chris's plugins article) supposed to do? I was hoping it would provide the cell location information that I've noticed other phones can pick up. However, I added it to my home screen, and nothing appears. Can someone enlighten me?

Done a quick msdn search for you and it doesn't come up with anything sensible!

Cell Broadcast/SIM Toolkit Plug-In

Description: Displays cell broadcast- and SIM Toolkit-related messages.

If you use the Cell broadcast plug-in, it can give you your location. I say "it can" because it depends on the country. I have seen this work on my SmartPhone in Denmark and Turkey, but it does not work in US. So try it and if it works post here country/carrier so other can enjoy it too :)

You can also use "cellbroadcast" for textsource. In my experience, simtkitidletext gives you your location while cellbroadcast gives news and broadcast in a banner band (scrolling horizontally)

I tried this, and as you said the plugin does not seem to work in the US. I tried using both 'cellbroadcast' and 'simtkitidletext' as the textsource, and got nothing both times.

I used to get these messages when I was on Vodafone in the UK- the phone code of the area you were in would come up. And I remember in Italy, it would come up with the name of the area you were in, which I really liked...

The Orange network doesn't seem to use them though. Shame, really...

I think vodafone are the only UK operator that provide this

That's what I assumed it would do... Funny that it doesn't work here (Australia/Optus), since I know other people get "cell info" text on their (non-SPV) phones. The cell info others get is the name (location) of the cell their in.

hi there

i know that my provider (vodafone germany) sends the local area code thats part of the saving plan this way (can see it on my nokia and my p900 but of course not with my e200 - no matter if i try cellbroadcast or simtoolkit ...). to bad. another non standard solution on windows powered smartphones. no matter if i need it or not.

cheers, lutz
