Using Contact List on Smartphone

I am a newbie to my Motarola MX200. I like it, but one thing I can't seem to figure out. I have a huge contact list; over 1200 entries. So, when I want to search by name I try to enter a set of characters according to the regular convention. But that doesn't work well because it won't let me enter the exact three letters I am wanting because of the way it's programed. I can't easily find my contact without scrolling down. Any advise? Or just a problem that can't be fixed?

You can continue to type until the list is narrowed down further. Other than that...thats the way the software works. I'm told this problem (and others) is more evident with LARGER contact lists like yours.
