Guest ClintEastman Posted January 2, 2004 Report Posted January 2, 2004 Microsoft Portrait is a research prototype for mobile video communication. It supports .NET Messenger Service, Session Initiation Protocol and Internet Locator Service on PCs, Pocket PCs, Handheld PCs and Smartphone. It runs on local area networks, dialup networks and even wireless networks with bandwidths as low as 9.6 kilobits/second. Microsoft Portrait delivers portrait-like video if users are in low bandwidths and displays full-color video if users are in broadband. In low bandwidths, portrait video possesses clearer shape, smoother motion, shorter latency and much cheaper computational cost than do conventional video technologies. Microsoft Portrait pursues providing presence notification, chat/voice/video functions anytime, anywhere, on any device. Go Get It!!
Guest Disco Stu Posted January 2, 2004 Report Posted January 2, 2004 uuuummmmmmm..........what's that in English, please :?:

Guest McHale Posted January 2, 2004 Report Posted January 2, 2004 and also Voice chat WITHOUT using your cell network (free). If your smartphone or PPC has working 802.11b, this could save a ton of cash!!! -Mc
Guest A.Hughes Posted January 6, 2004 Report Posted January 6, 2004 Is it true that this version only works with e200, the bumpf says that it is for 2003 phones etc,,,i loaded onto my e100 (which i had the previous 2.1 version no problems) and got an error message saying that it wasnt a valid CE application.... Thanks in advance for any comments or assistance, getting a bit worried that i am going to have to upgrade my phone yet again to use apps like this..
Guest JRC Posted January 6, 2004 Report Posted January 6, 2004 Don't work on my SPV E200 !!! the install program don't work !!!
Guest capt_janeway Posted January 6, 2004 Report Posted January 6, 2004 Same here - can't install it!
Guest A.Hughes Posted January 6, 2004 Report Posted January 6, 2004 not long since downloaded details of how to install Portrait 2.2 onto my e100, according to the author ChrisJM and Brody, the app is okay for smartphone 2002 (install instructions released on msmobiles news http://www.msmobilenews.com/?cid=73 its a strange world,or is it,,,does anyone know whats going on any more
Guest bdmoore Posted January 6, 2004 Report Posted January 6, 2004 Install failed here too :) Shame, this looks like a cool app!
Guest blade6750 Posted January 6, 2004 Report Posted January 6, 2004 I have managed to install it on my E200. The standard way of installing the app fails. What you need to do is grab the cab file and install that on your SPV Install the app the normal way and let it fail. then do the following: 1. On your computer got the the "Microsoft ActiveSync" dir in "program files". 2. Within this dir there will be a "Microsoft Portrait" dir. 3. Enter this dir and copy the "portraitSP.ARM.cab" file to your SPV. 4. Run the cab file from your phone using your file explorer e.g SmartExplorer. And thats it. MS Portrait will install.
Guest A.Hughes Posted January 7, 2004 Report Posted January 7, 2004 way to go blade, thanks you saved me some time, i was going to post same info this morning :) Just a precautionary note guys, check IPSM/windows/app mgr, look for the portrait folder and check that you dont have a microsoft portrait.ink item, if you do get rid, you dont need it, its what was put hteir when portrait failed to install from the main app exec - do this before you laod the Arm.cab file if you can, this .ink file is about 800kb.
Guest zajfman Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 I have a problem. It seems the only way for me to get in contact with my pc, is when the phone is in the cradle. And even when its in the cradle I cant seem to get a picture, from my web-cam, to apear on the phone. What do I have to do, to make an connection with my pc throug GPRS, and what does it take to see the person infront of the PC webcam on the phone ? Help please :? -zajfman
Guest A.Hughes Posted January 9, 2004 Report Posted January 9, 2004 their was a topic not so long ago about a camera lead available so that you could use the likes of portrait, cant find it at the moment, when i do i will post here, basically you cant view when your phone is in the cradle you need your camera installed, (e200 i think would be diffuicult as the camera is on theback of the phone so you wouldnt be able to be seen by the other person unless you kept spinning the phone round). will keep searching for the topic.
Guest A.Hughes Posted January 9, 2004 Report Posted January 9, 2004 the topic on camera cable is number 90125, i've never posted alink to a topic before so i cant give you the shortcut link, however if you go to the Dvice specific forum and scroll through you will see awarners review of the camera cable.
Guest zajfman Posted January 9, 2004 Report Posted January 9, 2004 Ok thanks  How about the GPRS problem. I cant seem to get in contact with my pc when I try logging on through GPRS. Im thinking it must be some registration on the phone. But what and where ? :? One of the smart things about Portrait is, that you can use it as a sort of survaillance cam. But that doesn´t do my any good if the phone has to sit in the cradle. Please help me here :) -zajfman
Guest A.Hughes Posted January 9, 2004 Report Posted January 9, 2004 havnt got any experience of logging on to my PC remotely, but there are plenty of topics on here if you use the search function. If you have a web cam at home and its on the you should be able to view through your phone without the camera attached (your home doesnt need to see you so you dont need camera, if you were talking to some-one you could see them with your phone, but you would need to use camera lead and phone out of cradle for them to see you, if you get my drift). from memory, when you dial your computer remotely(or using portrait) you need to know your computers IP adrees (to get your IP address use search on your desktop)
Guest zajfman Posted January 9, 2004 Report Posted January 9, 2004 Okay... I understand everything youre saying. Since you have been so helpfull this far, let my show you excactly what happens when I try using Portrait. Remember Portrait is basically the excact same program as Messenger. The only differense is, that with Portrait you are able the see webcam image of the person you are talking with. 1) I sign in with my .netpassport in Portrait. 2) A buddylist apears. I select a buddy who has a webcam (in this case my self, using another .netpassport) 3) I send an invitation to this buddy. He (in this case I) gets the invitation in MS Messenger and accepts the call. The person jumps over to his Portrait program, running on the pc. 4) MS Portrait then tries to call the IP adress on my SPV. After some time it comes with an message saying that "IP this and that" does not accept calls. And thats it. There is also another possibility to connect with Portrait. 1) From MS Portrait, running on the SPV, I can call my pc IP adress directly (instead of selecting the person from the buddylist). But this doen´t seem to work at all. It simply says "connecting..." but never seems to connect. BUT if I put the SPV in the cradle, it connects right away.
Guest A.Hughes Posted January 9, 2004 Report Posted January 9, 2004 Check out this link, it will answer all if not most of your queries, as it is a trial version their are bound to be some bugs, but you let the developers know and they will reply. Guest zajfman Posted January 9, 2004 Report Posted January 9, 2004 Dude.... I figured it out !!! Dammit its simple. I JUST NEEDED TO TURN OFF MY FIREWALL ON THE PC !!! And I´ll tell you the result is magnificent !!! Now I can watch everything thats happing at home, on my SPV !! Thanks for all youre help ! -zajfman

Guest Bingo Posted January 12, 2004 Report Posted January 12, 2004 thanks for the response ... but I'm obviously too stoopid to be able to do install this software .. I've had numerous failed messages everything from not "enough space on device" to "unsigned app" I'm giving up ... I'll wait till they have a better install process ... one for stoopid people ... ahh ... friendly microsoft ... cheers.
