Guest alexknight Posted December 18, 2002 Report Posted December 18, 2002 seems to be some usefull info about the certification issue on the msdn newsgroups. http://msdn.microsoft.com/newsgroups/loadf...phone.developer Its on page one - article number nine have a look on there see what the nice man from orange has to say about it - might be worth someone who knows more than me about these things e-mailing him, his name is Craig Peacock and his e-mail not unsurprisingly is [email protected]. He seems to be the man in the know!! Hope this helps Alex
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted December 18, 2002 Report Posted December 18, 2002 Stand by for a big announcement in the new year! P
Guest Shuflie Posted December 18, 2002 Report Posted December 18, 2002 Are you in the know or is the big announcement speculation? I hope its the former and has something to do with lifting the restrictions on certification. Got my call from Orange to ask how I was getting on with my SPV and this was the main thing I said I wasn't happy with.
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted December 18, 2002 Report Posted December 18, 2002 It's a definite, but I can't reveal details... P
Guest DJHope Posted December 18, 2002 Report Posted December 18, 2002 Not just SPV with cert now http://www.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=1014
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted December 18, 2002 Report Posted December 18, 2002 I could tell you, but then i'd have to kill you! All I can say, is certification is here to stay, but developers will be looked after by Orange. P
Guest MBoden Posted December 18, 2002 Report Posted December 18, 2002 Thats allright Paul, just tell me, i'll take my chances in hand-to-hand combat with you afterwards ;-) Developer certs is only half the way, best case senario will mean that people who have a developer phone can run software from another developer and thats all fine and dandy, but noone in their right mind will pay 600$ to get a piece of freeware certified :-/
Guest DJHope Posted December 18, 2002 Report Posted December 18, 2002 MICROSOFT CERTIFICATION COSTS $600 NOT ORANGE CERTIFICATION sort yourselves out, at the moment it dosnt appear that you can get your applications certified unless your very good friends with orange (i could be wrong here) In janurary orange are working out a way that you and i can certify applications and their IS NO INDICATION THAT THIS WILL BE $600 AND WHY WOULD ORANGE QUOTE A PRICE IN DOLLARS!
Guest alexknight Posted December 18, 2002 Report Posted December 18, 2002 The $600 isn't conpulsory either - its like companq etc who use the designed for windows sickers on all their machines - if you pay the money to microsoft for their certification which basically says you are competent to design apps for the smartphone - not that they will work Orange haven't decided what they are going to do about freeware etc so it a bit premature to be talking about them trying to make money out of us just yet (let them say so first at least!!) this is a copy from a msdn newsgroup which explains some more about this Subject: Re: Orange Certification From: "Craig Peacock" The Orange approval route is aimed at Business applications we are looking at ways of developers who want to do their own development on the SPV for personal use etc. regards Craig -- Craig Peacock Orange UK www.developers.orange.co.uk As you can see the current system of charging for application signing (Orange approval) is "aimed at Business applications" so i would hope this means freeware will be checked out and certified through a different channel? hopefully a free one Alex
Guest DJHope Posted December 18, 2002 Report Posted December 18, 2002 :D Finally someone else who knows something, notice that if you look at the certificate attached for an exe file using a windows destop machine (right click->digital signatures), it has no refernce to microsoft whatsoever only orange, orange are definately the ones disributing these microsoft have nothing todo with it.
