Guest holr Posted February 1, 2005 Report Share Posted February 1, 2005 Hi there, Does anyone have any ideas where one can get hold of some spares for the sp3i phone? Im looking specifically at the keypad part that has the joystick mounted on it.... Im looking at trying to modify my c500 phone you see (by putting a joystick in it). Have already voided the warranty by opening it ;-) and want to see if its possible to replace the c500's keypad with the sp3i. I have had chance to use a sp3i and I know its a different shape to the c500, however, after getting in and under the hood of the c500 I dont think there could be many differences at this level. Tried contacting htc directly and they informed me that they do not sell spares (unless as part of a refurb / out of warranty claim i guess) but however *unoficially* said that the similarities between the c500 and sp3i meant that it may be likely to get the joystick on the c500. I dont mind getting my hands dirty with a little bit of soldering either. Im just looking for some kind soul to point me in the direction of either : a) where I could buy the keypad for the sp3i (or tmobile's sda etc) :D possibly some pictures of said keypad so I could compare the sp3i and c500 keypads, like for like. Guest holr Posted February 2, 2005 Report Share Posted February 2, 2005 Ok, contacted HTC in the UK who informed me that it is bradpoint in dubai that do the repairs and stuff for imate devices. Went onto club imate, and asked them for help on how to get a joystick module for an "out of warranty" sp3i..... ....theres where Im to at the moment. Waiting on a reply for an email from someone so keeping my fingers crossed that I can buy the one part I need! If I can get it, im going to try to modify the spv c500 to take the sp3i joystick. May involve a bit of soldering and stuff, and of course, the warranty is out the window, but im game for a laugh! If anyone has any other ideas as to how to obtain a joystick for the sp3i, then let me know ;-) Or for that matter, any other mini joystick modules (there has to be someone out there that knows where to get phone joysticks? even if its not the imate sp3i one? Guest mkent_barbados Posted February 3, 2005 Report Share Posted February 3, 2005 A friend of mines sp3i joystick fell off, but worked fine when he put it back on...but was worried it would fall off again so took it back off and put a little superglue in the hole in it...BAD idea, must be really tight on the joystick "handle" and some glue squeezed out...and then nothing worked. Even though I havent made the mod yet (no joystick) its not too difficult to get into the c500 phone (and i guess the sp3i) so ill go away and take a bunch of piccys to make a dummies guide ;-) The guide i did use from these forums, the de dusting one, wasnt too straightforward... After emailing a few people they all say they do not ship parts unfortunately, only take in phones to repair (if out of warranty you pay for the parts then). If you need to contact someone regarding a warranty / out of rwarranty repair for your imate branded device, email these friendly chaps.... [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] btw yes i realised that all these emails are from different extensions, but they are all contractors etc of imate in dubai. also, find attached a document i received from calvern regarding the sending back of your phone for reference ;-) I would strongly suggest contacting these people before sending it back however, im just posting this for your info. *edit* Forgot to add, that I asked them directly now, if I could have the joystick to modify my c500 phone with, as now they have confirmed they will not send the part out for a out of warranty fix. Will update when I get a reply. Sunu only gave me a phone number, and as I work mon-fri 9-5 (and can't make personal calls @ work) I'm a bit stuffed... I think my joystick may need replacing though (as well as the LCD), as it's developed a slight fault (pressing right doesn't always work) - if I do get a replacement joystick, I'll ask HTC if they can send the original one back to me, and I'll pass it onto you - it's a bit scratched, but a lick of paint should sort it! With regards getting you an email addy here goes: the website (as you may know already) is www.htceurope.com and if you check there you can log a fault with HTC Europe. Im not sure if this is just for orange brand phones, as I was told by them that with imate devices you need to go to dubai! I logged a call once with them recently (when I asked them about spare parts) as this is all you can do on their website - note it is devoid of any contact details (note the taiwan website is different - still talking about htceurope.com here). After logging the call I had a reply from someone there, so give [email protected] a try, he is a helpful friendly fellow and should be able to answer your questions. Unfortunately there is no general helpdesk that i know of. That would be really fantastic if you got your phones joystick repaired and maybe asked them to keep the old one as an emergency "spare"! I did try and log a fault on their site, but after entering my serial number, the following page didn't work (2 boxes, one either side of the page - I presume that the one on the left is meant to list typical problems that can be selected (which will then appear in the right hand box) - but the boxes didn't contain anything!)?? Not that it matters... I contacted Tim @ HTC Europe, and he informed me that they don't support i-Mate devices...so I'm just waiting on (another) response from i-Mate (and I'll probably end up having to send the phone overseas :evil: ) Thanks for supplying the email address though, much appreciated! Sunu then told me to contact HTC Europe, who told me they don't deal with i-Mate devices and I should get back in touch with i-Mate...?!? Just wondering what you think... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I have already emailed a 'Sami Awad' asking whether I can just order a replacement LCD and keypad, but he wrote back saying; "...to repair any of our devices, our devices should be served or repaired only in our authorized service center (company policy)..." So I'm just waiting on another email to get a rough quote as to how much the repair will cost. I will ask about getting another joystick sent, but judging by what Sami said, it doesn't look too promising. In the meantime, I don't suppose you could do me a favour could you? Next time you open up your C500, could you check the back of the LCD for a part ID number? I'm pretty certain that the SP3i and SP3/C500 use the same LCD, and as I've not heard anything from i-Mate yet I'm gonna shop around for a faulty SP3/C500 (with working LCD)... Maybe I should just give up, and buy a new one! (think I may get in touch with vodafone - I've been on the same contract for at least 3 years now...I think it's about time for a (low cost/free) handset upgrade!)
