Disconnected calls

I'm having a problem with my Omnia II in that calls are getting disconnected in the middle of a conversation quite frequently. For example, this morning somebody had to call me back three times because the call got interrupted. Afterwards I managed to reproduce it at the same spot in my home by calling myself with another cellphone. However, the O2 shows full 5-bar signal at that specific spot. I've also had the problem at other places, again with a good signal.

I'm currently running Gary Crutcher's JC1 18 March ROM (first flashed complete official MobiPro JC1 ROM, then nb0 from Gary), but had the same problem with previous ROM's, including official ones.

Anyone else experienced similar problems? Is it a regular problem with the O2, do I have a faulty device, or could it be a problem with my operator (Vodafone NL). Any additional tests that I can perform to find out the cause of this problem?

BTW I also noticed a few times that when receiving a call (before answering), the phone changed from 3G to G(PRS). At other times, during the call no data connection was available (e.g. instead of the 3G or G icon, it shows two arrows and a cross, and for example Opera couldn't connect to any site), so I guess the connection had switched from 3G to 2G mode. However, signal strength in all cases was still 5 bars.

Any idea why the phone switches to 2G mode during a call, even though signal strength seems OK? Could a switch between 3G and 2G result in a dropped call? Just to be sure, could it be related to the fact that I disabled the Samsung dialer? Is there any way to force 2G mode while making voice calls?
