omnia 2 vs droid ?

I recently had to replace my omnia 2 under the damage warranty(89.00 deductible). I was thinking real hard about just selling the replacement and my i910 on ebay to cover the early upgrade cost for a new phone. I went to check out the droids and was not impressed. Sure it may be faster but am i really that impatient? The droid x is packed with all kinds of multimedia software(which i rarely use) but the extra hump where the camera is on top is cumbersome. The droid 2 nice but do not like the slide out keyboard. The htc was real possibity(like the sense integrated in). It seems though with the 7 panels that are customizable on the droids other than speed no real reason to switch plus I use excel and word quite abit and if i am correct would have to buy docs to go or another app from droid to use my mobile office. I have for now decided to wait and see what winmo 7 phones look like. Any observations from the forum would be greatly appreciated!

Great questions.

I have the DroidX (DX) . I really don't do documents so your question had me play around a bit.

On the New DX update to Froyo 2.2 there is a program called "QuickOffice" I created a 2 sentence DOX. and sent it to my PC.

I opened it on my PC with Office 2010 Beta,no problem.

I took a older saved DOC. on my OC and emailed it to the DX , it opened with no issues.

As far as a "hump" After using the phone for 1/2 hour most people will say what hump?? If anything Its a benefit.

Winmo 7 for me..... just looks boring. Large blue stamps with icons on them. Seems like a lot of effort on MS part to sell a music player. Then most likely, I just don't get it.

If I was in your position if and when you decide to upgrade to a new phone Do only a one year contract. With ALL THE changes two years with one phone is too long so go for the extra bucks.

As a side note I sold my i920 on Ebay for $125.00 after fee's I ended up with about $115.00.

Best to ya..

 ;)

What about excel? Can your droid open excel and edit? Do you not think the droidx is bulky? How do you carry it ? Belt holster or in pocket? 125.00 for the i920? It looked like they were going for more than that. I was going to include the accessaries as well.

THINK again !...... If you think WM7 is worthless or not a contender for dominance in the smart-fone competition.

1st- there's wayyyy too much $$$ involved and up for grabs.

2nd- gonna be SERIOUS consequences from ORACLE's licensing lawsuit vs. Google/Android....watch and see!!

3rd- WM7 going to spell death knell for "flash", incorporating new version of silverlight...(attacking Android further).

4th- WM7 going to bring 4g, mesh with Win7 and PC more than even Iphone/mac.

5th- WM7 fon hardware will be cutting edge and remain so...

6th- Most smartphone users do NOT WANT to surrender personal info to Google..

Biggest cost and subsidizing still remains in the handset. Manufacturers and service providers are locked up by OS of the Fon and its Licensor.... MS has the force and cash to put themselves in dominant position and have watched and let the current smartphone trends shake out...to their future advantage.

MS better figure a better way to "dominate" the smartphone market. No longer is this the PPC world that they've known and loved. This is the big boy arena and as far as I can tell the "mickey mouse" GUI a-la ZUNE isn't going to cut the mustard.

You can have a Ferrari engine and sleek interior, but if you put a PT Cruiser chassis on it, I DOUBT ppl would be talking about the the state of the art hardware!

And thats EXACTLY what MS has done so far. The design team from HTC needs to head on over to MS and knock some sense into the "design team" of WinPo.

...just my 2 cents

Boy, am I glad I'm not the only one who thinks what I've seen so far of WMP7 looks clunky, unintuitive and, well...butt ugly. Not looking forward to it.

It is good to get the discourse going! I no little about winmo 7 and would be shocked to see ms drop the ball on their come back..but who knows? They seem to have fallen way behind the competition to start with. I am in a good place as i am eligible for upgrade with discounted price anytime(new every two no till april) and may take the advice to go with 1 year contract instead of 2 Also winmo 7 is suppose to be out by Thanksgiving right?. I am very satisfied with the omnia 2 with running amds 1.1 base 6.5.5 rom and spb mobile shell and mobile sense as add on for now. Still like the size of omnia 2. Had almost decided to go with droidx but did not like the size, then the incredible was looking promising and seemed very light but decided to wait as i have a brand new omnia 2 and can always sell the omnia2 and omnia1 on ebay any time. I really do not want to pay for extra apps to use excel and it appears that may not be the case but need to find out for sure.

WP7 will be awesome. I'm holding out to see it in person before getting a new handset, but I'm guessing that's what my next one will be.

Here's a video that shows a little more than I've seen elsewhere. You can basically skip the first two minutes and not miss anything.

Exactly !

The discourse should focus on HOW both android and iPhone work: using ''apps" to run programs whereas WM7 uses an OS similar to the PC and Win7. Again, FLASH is doomed and the time lagged behind iPhone + Android is put to good use spending $$$ on development.

WM7 fons will be as cutting edge as hardware can use.....SOME say that it will be the hardware that has to catch up to WM7's capabilities. Exactly what MS has angled for.

No doubt the GUI will be eminently changeable, and browsing will be more akin to PC than anything previous.

There needs to be a drastic redesign of a "gui". A computer or even a tablet gui should be NOTHING like a phone gui. It just doesn't translate.

The book on making guis needs to be thrown out completely.

this thread:

http://www.modaco.com/content/i9x0-omnia-h...face-for-omnia/

now dead, needs to be revived and put into practice.

my phone is not a PC, nor is it a ZUNE, nor is it another iPhone. When are the designers going to create something magical? speed and accessibility need to be of high priority, but not at the expense of visual appeal.

...just my 3 cents

I think WP7 will offer plenty of speed and accessibility. It looks fluid as hell. Visual appeal is really a personal preference. I like the look of WP7 personally. And I think it'll be amazing to use.

Something like the now-defunct omnia UI linked above has a certain aesthetic appeal to it, but wouldn't be anywhere near as functional as the WP7 UI. And WP7 is still more pleasing to the eye.

WP7 isn't a retread on any previous UI I've seen, and appears very tailored to the connected handset experience.

It does look promising! Hope they do blow away the competition. definitely will be waiting till i can see it in person on a handset. Im not that hard to please though since what i need is a business phone( would be nice to get rid of the stylus though).

I do use a Nite-ize belt holster so it a bit large but I being in(or was) in construction it offered excellent impact protection. Their is also a more "professional" slide in belt carrier

If your a suit type person it may seem large but I believe that IF you were to carry one for a few days I think that your would have a hard time giving it back because of the features.

I haven't tried excel but the "QuickOffice app does have a QuickSheets app

The Verizon 30 day Buy and Try policy would fit your situation fine.

Of course as a sick side note both the i920 and the DroidX will reach "End of Life" March 2011 per Verizon

 ;)

I never really got much experience with quick office but my dad who owns an incredible was having issues opening some .doc files created in MS office, don't know about excell files but like someone said it's supposed to support them.

I guess one way to find out is to do a test drive for the 30 and see. I know there is an app ,docs-to-go, that can be purchased but I have a strong dislike for having to buy something like that when it should be a oem on every smart phone.

I would expect the I920 would be ready for the boneyard but why the droidx so soon? I was surprised to the droid2 replace the original so soon. The 1 year contract is beginning to make more sense.

After a bit more reading and researching it appears for now my trusty old omnia is best option.Droid not really set up as a business phone like for what I need unless I am willing to spend more money for apps to make it work.I use excel, tasks quite a bit.It looks like the perfect phone if you r into pictures, video, etc(although faster browsing is appealing!)

Edit: Really hoping someone from the droid camp can show me how i can still use excel or similar app as well as outlook tasks.(i use tasks to keep track of prospects and set up reminders and keep notes on where i am with them and what has been said)Word not as important but have alot of docs saved on my phone(sd card). Also what does droid have for backup? i use myphone now.

I sold my Omnia 2 on ebay for around 150.00, got my Droid X, best decision ever made, WP7 is struggling to just stay afloat, not only will microsoft need to do something spectacular to catch up to Droid but then they will need to create something completely brand new, innovative and fully functional in order to pull ahead in the mobile race. by the new year Droid will be running on a dual core 1.2ghz processor with so much system memory it wouldnt matter where you install programs, its open source, HDMI out, rediculous 8mp camera, 3 microphones, conference calling, pocket office, and an app for everything and anything you could think of.

my company paid just over 2000.00 for a Fluke wireless analyzer, i warned them not to get it since there is an app that does exactly the same thing from the droid market called Wifi Analyzer but they bought it anyway, we tested them side by side turns out we could have saved 1500.00 since it would have been easier to purchase a droid x with no plan, add the app to it and use it as a wifi analyzer.

to sum it up the pros far outweigh the cons when it comes to droid vs microsoft. and regarding the silverlight vs flash, silverlight has been out for well over a year and i have never installed it on any of my pc's

Winmo 7 looks like they are going the way of the social networking sites as well, which is not important for me...I am right on the edge..the only reason I would wait for winmo is office mobile, still need to see if droid will do what I need it to do.Was told buy verizon I could do the 30 day thing but would have to pay a 35.00 restocking fee if decide to return phone and would not be bound to a renewal.May be the best way to go.Anyone used gtasks yet it sound like it offers the same features as outlook tasks?

To me that UI looks like a bad titanium. I actually really like the GUI to wp7, I'm not a fan of excessive graphics and shading. Many times it detracts from your actual content.

http://pocketnow.com/windows-phone/divine-...ace-on-the-side

That's a write-up talking about the wp7 homescreen so you can get an idea of the kind of thought that actually went into this new metro UI.
