Sorry – noobie question alert!
I've just got a Legend and can't see how to set the sounds right. I want:

A sound when I receive an email or SMS
No sound for a Calendar event reminder

Or are there apps that would give this?

I think you can disable the sound for the calendar at the calendar  
Menu > More > Settings > Reminder settings > Set alerts & notifications
