samuel337, the new E200 ROM version is 2.6.1.3 a definite jump from out 1.9.x.x.

When I bought my XPhone, I was told it was the English version and had no reason to suspect otherwise...so go me.

But if you have chinese bluetooth menu, then i think you were cheated? :?

Oddly enough, I contacted O2 about the Chinese BlueTooth setup screens. The response I got was that there are two versions, Chinese and U.S. English, and it should be plainly marked on the box. I don't know about anyone else, but my box does not mention anything about Chinese or English.

I would think that if I had a Chinese version, everything would be in Chinese???

oh, no no, you can change to english but with the exception of the bluetooth menu still in chinese....

You should sue the bugger..

I have my XPhone box right here...not a single mention of it being the "Chinese" version...not a single mention of it being ANY version.

There is as sticker on the bottom w/ the IMEI #, Serial #, & Part #, that's it! It's these little things that make me think HTC sucks dogballs.

As for a course of action, these are the burdens we bear for being early adopters. I don't think there's much of a *real* case (or cause) for legal action...rather, more buyer beware than anything. I agree with you spockie, that I (we) were cheated, but unscrupulous sellers are everywhere...what can ya do?

Not to mention the E200 or any possible English ROMs from 02 will take care of the problems (hopefully)!

XPhoneGeek, I have an O2 XPhone with Chinese input. I was wondering, after the E200 ROM upgrade, does your phone still retain the Chinese input method? Please advice. Thanks.

XPhoneGeek,

In your opinion, do you think it's worth the trouble to install the Orange update on our XPhones or wait for 02 to publish their own update?  I am skeptical of how long it will take 02 to actually rollout an update, but I don't have anything to really base that skepticism on.

Once the Orange update is installed, you said the phone becomes application locked, but does it also become http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=3976>SIM Lock?

I have the Chinese version of the XPhone and would really like my bluetooth bonding menu to be in English, not Chinese!!  :D

Thanks!

PS - I am also in the US, on Cingular's network.

Were you able to resolve the bluetooth in Chinese issue????

dling1971,

I have not installed this update myself, but those who have confirm that it DOES fix the Chinese character/Bluetooth menu issue.

I will confirm that the Orange ROM upgrade does fix the Chinese Bluetooth setup problem. After the upgrade, the XPhone (or any Voyager model) is no different than an SPV E200.

A quick note on Cingular and this is not a slam, just information. GSM typically operates at 1900MHz in the North America and 1800MHz everywhere else. To speed up their GSM rollout, Cingular chose to overlay it on their existing 850MHz network. They do have some areas that use 1900MHz such as Washington state and North and South Carolina (I'm sure there are others). If you notice all of Cingulars phones are 850MHz and 1900Mhz. This is not an issue if you are using a phone such as the Motorola V600 (quad band), but the Voyager based models are 1800Mhz and 1900Mhz. I know some people have said they use these phones with one carrier and roam on another carrier even in their home area. This works fine in some areas, but not in others. I tried Cingular in the Atlanta area where Cingular only has 850MHz service. Even though AT&T and T-Mobile have pretty good 1900MHz service in this area, Cingular does not have a roaming agreement with either of them in this area. Sitting at my house using a Cingular SIM my XPhone would not work, but I get a full signal with an AT&T and T-Mobile SIM.

chanceu,

We have a similar issue 'round these here parts. I live south of Boston and use Cingular, an 850 only area. With my XPhone, I roam onto T-Mobile and ATT no problem, always have great signal. Of course, if you have the Nation GSM plan than no extra costs are incurred. Traveling down RT. 95 South I lose signal in southern Rhode Island and do not regain until Exit 30 or so in Connecticut, which is almost 100 miles!

We've "conducted tests" to prove that this stretch is covered by Cingular 850 only and ATT/T-Mo 1900 however there seems to be no roaming agreement here, thus a tri-band 900/1800/1900 phone with Cingular is useless here as well.

Many people slam Cingular for their use of 850 (I know you weren't) but if you think about it, having Cingular as your carrier, and subscribing to their National plan while using an 850/1900MHz phone really get you the BEST possible coverage while in the US. This allows you to use the two major frequencies used by the big three (well, really two now that Cing owns ATTW) carriers thus giving the best possible coverage.

I agree. If you compare Cingulars coverage with AT&T and T-Mobile, it's better than both combined. Especially if you subscribe to their nationwide service. The problem is that the majority of their service that gives them better coverage is 850MHz. You either have to have a quad band phone (or at least a phone that supports 850MHz) or hope that you never go anywhere that Cingular does not have a roaming agreement with the other carriers. Without question, when the Cingular/AT&T deal is complete, they will have the best coverage by far. However, with FTC requirements and just general merger issues, that will probably take a couple years.

Right, which (little kid rant mode on) is a total bummer, but otherwise good news for Cingular subscribers. And it's funny how some of those T-Mobile people HATE Cingular! :D

Of course, the keystones here may be the Mpx100 and Mpx as I've read a number of official Motorola releases that state the phone will come in two tri-band flavors, US and European. Thus, we may have an 850 Smartphone soon! And that makes me pretty damn happy...although my personal belief is they should just make them quad band and problem solved!

Hi, just thought id let all you people know that O2 "do not have any news regarding the release of any future upgrades" i.e they aren't publicly going to release if at all... an XPhone ROM update....

The thing that gets to me the most is the inability to utilise all the bluetooth profiles e.g. object push for sending and receiving files. Other bluetooth devices scan for services - i only get SSA which is the dialup profile and the audio gateway profile for headsets. Where are all the other (listed on the box and website) standard bluetooth profiles?!?!?!

Also can someone PLEASE PLEASE tell me how to firstly backup the entire rom image anywhere and then restore a new rom like the orange or qtek?

this would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I have installed it & it works just fine. Its a little different than the O2 but all in all a good upgrade. The jury is still out on the battery life though. I have not had any of the issues even Orange users are reporting, & with cleartype the text looks really good, not all blurry like some are reporting. I'm using TMobile US & I can't say that I notice any difference in call clarity, mines was good beforehand. The really nice thing about the Orange upgrade is if you hve to http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?p=97945#97945>Hard Reset, you don't loose all the operator specific stuff, like you do with O2.

I love to know how you flashed the rom on your xphone with e200 update?

It's not publicly known yet but the English Xphone update is already out at the service centres. You can have the phone updated for free at their service centres (unless you got the e200 in it). Heard that O2 isn't going to post it on their website for download for their own reasons.

Latest English Xphone ROM is

Radio version 1.12.01

Operator: 1.10.18.3

Manufacturer: 1.11.18.23

Microsoft: 4.20.13349.0

Can you comment on the improvements the new ROM offers? Does it suffer from the problems the Orange ROM has and does it improve battery life? Thank you

Well, if that's true, it really sucks! I guess I'll just take a jog from Massachusetts over to Hong Kong to get my phone flashed...oh wait.

cheongsta88, how credible is the source of this info?

Good lookin' out!

It's true but the ROM is not officially out yet. That is why the ROM is not released on the website. It seems that this update is meant to fix the missing chinese T9 input.

In any case, the update available at the Singapore service centre seems suspiciously like the chinese ROM. And some users have reported a decrease in battery life with the new ROM.

Guest cheongsta88

This is credible. I got mine flashed at no charge. I'm not sure whether you need the receipt. Guess better call the service centre to verify before heading down there. It's completely different from the Chinese version and heard from the techies there that the update for the HK Chinese version is due end of this month.

The upgrade I got has no Chinese display and input. The battery improvement is there, BT serial ports, a new MMS client and ClearType is ON. If you take a look at the version numbers, the Microsoft OS build is newer than e200. Heard this is indeed official and new shipments will be with this version from now onwards but it won't be posted for download.

IronHide: i've been readin' your posts. it seems that we do have the same problem. we have the exact Xphone specs. As we speak i am downloading the Orange SPVE200 2.6.5.3 ROM. i have tried the qtek and i-mate but i always get the error 117. i will try using orange now and maybe try using the fix that i downloaded last night.

The O2 ROM is really pissin' me off BIG time.. to the point that i don't care if the phone dies!! i just want to get a new ROM, any ROM for that matter.. *sigh*

i am so sick and tired of all the hangups, plus i just don't feel like using my bluetooth with chinese characters in it. it just plain sucks. and the battery life, damn it!!! i don't even have a spare batt!!! ARGH!!!

so newaiz, before i loose it, i will finally change ROM at all costs. the only problem now is how to freakin' make it work.. ERROR 117. INVAID MODEL ID!!! WHAT THE?!?

Hi techiezee,

Unfortunately, I feel your pain. I gave up long ago on attempting to flash my phone with another manufacturer's ROM and learned to live with the shortcomings...although I do have to say I DON'T experience dropped calls which would p*ss me off the most. To be honest, I'm just waiting and waiting for the new Motorola MPx line of phones to hit the market...the MPx100 seems excellent, although I just heard it will not be released in the US :x

In any case, if you figure out HOW to get the ROM on the phone, let us know!!

Good luck
