Guest jcjdoss Posted July 22, 2004 Report Posted July 22, 2004 money does not mean innovation praise, feedback, respect, competition=innovation :Ppraise, feedback, respect, competition, are the steps from hobbiest to entrepentuer. When you get to competition what are you competing for...? Some type of pay. When you are so into your hobby that you loose time for other things, pay or money is the obvious next step. Take the best smartphone site on the web, modaco (brown nosing never hurt anybody). They were a free site until they grew. now they have Modaco plus, why, because of the growing cost for the site. Eventually these free innovations either bore the recreational programmer, or they decide to make some profit from it (profit is not neccecerily wealth) one way or the other. Granted it does not always mean money but it is the easiest and most tangable illustration to use. oh, and going back to the earlier comment, ive been doing http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewforum.php?f=43>homescreens long before we set up Alien Invention, and even before i was a mod (in fact, its through my hard work with http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=7695>Tweaks and http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewforum.php?f=43>homescreens that i was invited to be a mod). I was the first person to discover all the extra screen tweaking (look at the AI http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewforum.php?f=43>homescreens, Alien Invention was at the time, just the name for those http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewforum.php?f=43>homescreens, but we liked it so named the company after it). Not bragging, just stating facts. :D you've earned the right to brag. Fair enough, I only had a limited bit of info. But I needed to use it. My Apologies
Guest midnight Posted July 22, 2004 Report Posted July 22, 2004 i actually meant competition amongst homescreen developers, we drive each other along all the time we're improving, if you compare the homescreens being developed now compared to those a year ago you'll notice a vast difference. We each want to create the best homescreens out there without pay entering the equation :P also, just because someone gets paid to make a homescreen does not mean they will make better ones, in fact, most likely they will be manufactured, a single template they use that they then just do some gfx changes. I personally like to use different layouts each time, just to add some variety, but it does take much longer to develop homescreens in this way (MSN actually took me about a week on and off, going through about 4 redraws along the way)

The old american saying,"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" You'll actually get alot of people underselling the other at the same time loosing quality for the sake of profit
