Guest martin
I think it's to do with Broadcast channels where messages are received when you enter particular cell areas. I don't think many networks use it.
Guest orcinus
It's called "Cell info" or "Cell broadcast" in normal world... It enables the provider to push SMS content to your phone. Even when they don't offer this service, most providers push current cell's name over one of the channels (over here it's 50) which can prove useful for orientation if your city's covered densely enough and cells are named by street names. Problem is, i don't know where Smartphone (200x) prints the data it recieves via cell broadcast. Most cell phones show it on their home/standby screen, but since Smartphone's home screen behaviour depends on your current skin... i don't have a clue :?
