Guest pukkaspv Posted August 27, 2004 Report Posted August 27, 2004 sorry don't know if this has been menitoned on this board. Upgrading ur phone before 12 months doesn't mean u pay the rest of the contract without getting anything its like an admin fee for loss of earings or something for the period that they don't make up for by u upgrading. ur new 12 months starts from the date u upgrade but u shouldn't need to pay anything but the upgrade fee and/or cost of handset. i just change tariff to lowest one available and get a new contract. am waiting for orange to launch spvc500 online as they have great offers on now. best they have ever had. :)
Guest bolasz Posted August 31, 2004 Report Posted August 31, 2004 @TSCRYPTO Are you sure that he didn't say that the upgrade fee will be on your bill? Cause that's how they do it, you pay the handset prize in the store and the upgrade fee goes onto your next bill. Another thing, it also matters, which tariff you are currently on, this depends the handset prize on.

The receipt from the shop confirms it - it shows 79.99 followed by -79.99. I triple checked by asking the Orange dude, just to be sure... 8) EDIT: sorry, I misread this slightly - 79.99 is the handset cost - the 100.00 is the upgrade fee.
Guest fraser Posted September 3, 2004 Report Posted September 3, 2004 By the way, the "introduce a friend" thing doesn't give you £25 each. It gives you £25 worth of airtime. Pretty poor if you ask me, if it could even apply to line rental, it might me a good thing. Don't know about everyone else, but I rarely go over my bundled minutes each month.
Guest hamstar50 Posted September 4, 2004 Report Posted September 4, 2004 Good news for me today folks. As of tomorrow, I have have exactly 3 months remaining on my old Everyday 50 contract. Rang Orange and asked to upgrade to C500, said £75 upgrade free and phone for free. I'm a bit of a pennyless student so this isn't really an option. I said that my bills are not exactly at line rental and a bit above, will they take that into consideration...she put me through to retentions - i get the feeling she spoke to them first and said something like "he wants to leave and been with us 5 years...lets hook him up!) :-) so then she puts me through...the next woman said fine...free upgrade, no fee and only at exactly 9 months into contract though. She made note in account and said to call back Monday - they are cloased on Sunday to arrange the delivery. I'll keep you posted but this is a welcomed! Now that silver one is available on Premier..evevn though im not on it..i'll try blag one.
Guest hamstar50 Posted September 6, 2004 Report Posted September 6, 2004 Crazy Fools have no idea of the silver one in retentions - plus.."i'd get whatever i'm given". I said i've seen it in the store..he didn't even acknowledge that their is one. Guess you cant have it all. Upgrade went through fine though - free phone and no upgrade fee just 9 months into contract.
Guest dearsina Posted September 6, 2004 Report Posted September 6, 2004 A couple of notes for those of you who are considering upgrading: 1. Get insurance before you do anything else, get it right now! If anything is wrong with your current handset, call O and get it sorted, they will replace the handset if nessecary. My action key stopped working and I got a replacement without hassle. So presumably you have in your disposal a decent e200 or similar phone; what next? 2. Ebay! A well-kept E200 will easily fetch £120. That takes a big chunk out of the upgrade fee. But be quick, as the market for these phones is slowly getting saturaded (just a couple of months ago the E200 fetched for around £160-170). 3. Keep in mind the T-Mobile version of the phone which will be around the £150 mark too, if the rumors are true. I personally am a bit gutted that I finally have a device where I can play gameboy games perfectly well with sound, but am unable to, because of a very poorly designed joystick, if you can call it that. It seems like the old SPV v E100 story once again, so keeping your cool might be the best thing you've done for a while. sina london /my $0.02
Guest sponge Posted September 6, 2004 Report Posted September 6, 2004 For those of you that have it, check your home contents insurance. You may find your phone is already covered for accidental damage, loss or theft. Any faults will be covered under the Sale of Goods Act. So you may not need to buy extra insurance.
Guest fraser Posted September 6, 2004 Report Posted September 6, 2004 Any faults will be covered under the Sale of Goods Act. Which does not mention anything about "one year manufacturers guarantee" I might add. The "guarantee" on any goods is basically the length of time you'd reasonably expect it to work, which comes from the cost and the type of item. The upper limit is 6 years from the date of fault in Scotland, and (IIRC) six years from the date of purchase in England. My widescreen TV was estimated to be worth 4-5 years of use, so when it broke after 3, the manufacturer was liable for a portion of the cost. Had to get trading standards involved so that they would admit this though! So, when you take out that 5-year waranty on that £3000 plasma screen, you are wasting your money. The manufacturer is liable for any defects, which are about the only things governed by these "waranties" in the first place. They are only worth it if you get some sort of quick-fix out of it, e.g. Orange Care. Very handy, next day replacement is almost perfect!
Guest hamstar50 Posted September 6, 2004 Report Posted September 6, 2004 whilst were driven off topic and on things such as tvs :-) I thought i'd mention, if you buy and electrical goods from John Lewis, you automaticaly get a 3 year warranty - this may include phones as well. 1st if manufacturer years 2 and 3 are replacement/repair by John Lewis. You pay a little more with them (unless you mention u seen it cheaper within 10 miles) but you get good useful extras.
Guest sponge Posted September 6, 2004 Report Posted September 6, 2004 Which does not mention anything about "one year manufacturers guarantee" I might add. Just another addition: The SoGA is nothing to do with manufacturer's guarantees. Manufacturer's guarantees are in addition to your rights under the SoGA, not instead of. They can't use their own T&Cs to limit your rights under the law either. If anything ever goes wrong with a product, you use your rights under law, not what the manufacturer or retailer says. Problems may be resolved quicker if you can get a retailer or manufacturer to play ball under the guise of their 'warranty'; but it's not the only course of action and people often forget or just don't know their rights. Example: I bought a DVD player from Asda for £125. It came with a free 3yr warranty. Now I only expected a product like this to last a couple of years, and indeed it lasted just under 3. Now I would have found it difficult to pursue a claim under the SoGA, but I just took it back to Asda and, to their credit, they gave me a full refund. I then went elsewhere and bought a brand new DVD player, cheaper and better specification. So retail/manufacturer warranties can be a help.
Guest red1mp Posted September 24, 2004 Report Posted September 24, 2004 I am 8 months into another 12 month contract with Orange and have decided that I want to get rid of my rubbishy E200 and upgrade to the C500. I visited my local Orange shop today and they informed me that not only would I have to buy out the rest of my existing contract (which I expected) but that I would also have to pay an upgrade fee of 79.00 - making a total to upgrade of £179.99. This is a bit too expensive. I rang the upgrades people at 150 who said that there was nothing that could be done. I have just rung retentions, but they are closed on Sundays. I really dont want to leave Orange but at the same time do not want to have to wait until FEB next year to start a fresh 12 month contract. Is there anything I can do? I WILL leave Orange if necessary. Any advice anyone? Cheers All I did in this situation was take out another O contract where the C500 is FREE and swap sim card this way you get the phone FREE, keep your number and pay off your first contract monthly until the end. Also you can sell the phone on your first contract because the contract is on your sim not the phone. The money you make will help offset the remaining 4 months on your original contract and voila all is as you want it :)
