Fellow MVP Arne Hess over at PPCW.net is reporting on the imminent release of the MPx220 on O2 Germany. Great news, particularly if this means we'll see if in other O2 markets!

GeekZone is also reporting that TIM in Brazil are also about to launch the handset.

It took a while that Motorola finally announced their long awaited Motorola MPx220 Smartphone a couple of weeks ago and so far there wasn't any confirmed information available which carrier will release it.

Today, when I was in a local O2 shop, I picked up their latest shop-flyer, valid from 1. October until 14. October and for my surprise I found the following information:

On page 13, O2 Germany provides a forecast about upcoming devices for Christmas (Christmas - already?) and beside two new UMTS terminals from Motorola and Nokia and Nokia's latest Communicator, o2 Germany also pre-announced the Motorola MPx220!

and...

TIM (Telecom Italia), Motorola e Microsoft came together to announce the Motorola MPx220, running Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition for Smartphone. The new Smartphone will be available to TIM users in around 1.700 Brazilian cities where the GSM/GPRS is available. With this announcement, TIM claims to be the first mobile operator to make the new mobile phone available to the public.

The MPx220 is expected to available from September 2004, through TIM retail stores and corporate business customers. Expected price is R$2600 (US$890).

The MPx220 is a quad-band GSM mobile phone, with built-in 1.2 megapixel digital camera with flash, capable of video recording (3gpp). It is based on a TI OMAP 200 MHz processor, with 64MB ROM and 32MB RAM. It supports mini SD for memory expansion.

It also comes with a Java run-time environment for games, and .Net Compact Framework support. Bluetooth is available on this new model. The companies believe the corporate market will also benefit with its integration with Microsoft Exchange 2003, SSL and VPN support. The Li-ion 800mAh battery should support up to 7 hours talk time, and 8 days stand-by.

Microsoft believes the launch of Motorola's MPx220 in Latin America will help creating new business for local developers. TIM is already working to make a Developer Kit, consisting of a MPx220 plus SDK, support and data services available for developers. For this product launch, around 20 companies are working to have some new services available. For example TIM News will aggregate news content from Folha de Sao Paulo, Abril and O Globo, plus entertainment guide, all accessible over GPRS. Visa is also working to create payment services that would allow users to buy products and services and pay via mobile phone.

Good stuff... watch for more exciting announcements coming soon ;-)

"should"? thats not what early reviews are reporting... that would need a HUUUUUGE ROM improvement to get that "stamina" cause right now test models are "Power Monsters".

So as Shakespeare used to write about battery life... "To last or not to last, this is the question"
