Ever wanted to create a program for your smartphone or pocket pc quickly without having to know the in depth details of the programming languages?

Mobile applications in hours" is the pizza delivery-like promise made by Sybase to users of PocketBuilder 2.0, the latest version of the software company's rapid application development (RAD) tool for mobile and wireless applications.

Announced Monday, Sybase PocketBuilder 2.0 (formerly known as Pocket PowerBuilder) enables developers to create applications for Pocket PC 2002- and Windows Mobile 2003-based PDAs, smartphones, and other devices. It offers wizard-driven programming as part of its 4GL Integrated Development Environment, which includes hundreds of built-in functions, many ready-to-use components, and drag-and-drop RAD programming, Sybase said.

PocketBuilder integrates with SQL Anywhere Studio and supports data synchronization with IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, and Sybase systems. The new version includes native support for GPS systems, barcode scanners, SMS, smartphone platforms, on-device and plug-in cameras, and Pocket PC-based phones. In addition, it now supports the operating systems' integrated Calendar, Contact List, and Task List applications.

The PocketBuilder 2.0 development environment requires a 400MHz Pentium processor, 64MB of RAM, 47MB of hard drive space, additional storage space for Adaptive Server Anywhere (114MB recommended), and Windows 2000 with Service Pack 2 or Windows XP. Mobile device requirements include an ARM or XScale processor, 32MB of RAM, Microsoft ActiveSync, and the Pocket PC 2002 or Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition operating system.

PocketBuilder 2.0 will be available November 30 for $495.

At $495 this has a fairly high price, but it does have much potential.

But.. You can download Smartphone C++ Dev studio thingumy from MS's site for free!!!

For $495, I'll be expecting a "Star Trek Holodeck" style creation system, where you tell it what you want, and it magically makes it happen!!
