Mpx220 recalled!

I can personally confirm this, as I just returned from a Best Buy here in St. Louis that told me they had sent all their units back for recall. They had no new units in with the quoted "orange sticker"

Will one of the Moto Insiders please keep us posted on the number of people fired over this debacle? Something has to change in their corporate culture that allows this kind of bug-riddled c*** to be dumped upon their most dedicated customers.

I like my MPx200 but it only does half of what it's supposed to do. The 220 was supposed to be an improvement but it seems we are being treated with the same contempt yet again.

Sad!

Sorry guys, I do empathise, we SPV owners have been through this repeatedly. Sorry that Motorola have problems. At least it's only a problem in firmware though and not a hardware issue (like the multipress on C500, or lack of diagonals on E200).

I STILL mourn the MPX100. That would have been a top 'phone.

Ok guys, read the posting!! They are recalling the phone only to update the firmware for the volume boost. That's a GOOD thing. Why would anyone be upset over that? Now if they never did ANYTHING about it... that we could complain about. Personally I commend Moto for taking such quick action on it. From what I am hearing, the Best Buy units were "test" units to make sure there weren't any bugs they missed before the full cingular release. While they should have done this before ANYONE got the phone, at least they did it before cingular got it.

I mentioned this in another thread but heres something to ponder...

-Mpx220 not released by cingular yet

-Mpx220 pulled from best buy

-Audiovox 5600 will stop being sold along with all other AT&T branded and locked phones on Monday, as cingular is "flipping the switch" and everything is going under their network and control.

That leaves us with NO SMARTPHONES!!!

For what it is worth, I asked in one of the AT&T stores if Cingular was going to keep the 5600 and was told yes. They were supposed to be dropping the Audiovox ppcpe however.

I'll check into that, but I think there will definitly be a period (hopefully very short) where they don't carry the 5600. When they do... I may even consider switching... maybe

I don't recall saying they had perfect phones out of the chute. The v600 definately had it's share of problems. But if you re-read that thread, I said Motorola made right buy recalling them and sending those who were early adopters brand spankin' new ones with all the fixins... for FREE.

They chose to take them back and give people a brand new one instead of go through the risk of customers screwing them up or hacking the FW and screwing them up. This isn't bad customer service. This is good customer service. They can afford to do it. In fact, I remember a bellow by the "GREAT ONE" that Motorola would never update the FW for those that already had one and he knew because he was super smart. Looks like the truth is rearing it's ugly head again.

In comparison, Orange couldn't afford to do that type of recall... especially with the number of bug fixes they have. So instead, they are like, "Screw it, let the customer do it." As a hacker, I would like that option, but Motorola has been doing this long enough they probably have a list of decisions for it.

Also, let me state that I am not going to call for a new unit. Mine is absolutely fine with no problems. I'm working on getting the FW anyway and may do it myself if I get it. But I don't need it.

So with this update, I don't see how people will continue to say the c500 is better. Did you see the benchmarks?!?!?

Yeah, there's little doubt that the MPX220 is the fastest Smartphone today (at least from what I've seen...)

Still wouldn't want one but that's my preference...

The one good thing now is there are a bunch of choices for Smartphones. I know some that will not, under any circumstances, you a candybar phone. I know others that won't use a flip. The other big difference is screen size/resolution. I personally don't see the .2" a real difference and the color differences as being a big deal. Everyone should be happy that there's enough people that like both to keep them alive.

Microsoft is still a new player to the phone market and has done a good job becoming a big player, fast. Next year we're going to see some huge advances in the phone market. As long as Microsoft turns a profit and keeps gaining marketshare in areas of handhelds, phones, MP3 players, whatever, we're going to have some cool stuff to play with.

The big word is and will be convergence. Should be fun...

To clarify my position, it is not that I am criticizing Moto for their response to the MPx220 problem. Faced with the mess emanating from Best Buy, they have certainly done the right thing.

My concern is that this should never have happened. The manufacturer (Chen Mei?) should have caught this in testing, Moto should have caught it in their acceptance and production QC testing, and Best Buy should have caught it too. Does anyone here really think that no-one knew about it. Don't make me laugh! They caught it, mis-estimated the incidence, and then decided that the personal and career consequences for pushing it forward and delaying (further) the marketing plans were too severe, and buried it in a carefully worded memo that provided themselves with denyability when it brewed up. In this light, the idea that the Best Buy offer was a "test" of their quality leaves a nasty taste in the mouth. This is the most disrespectful and cynical way to treat your customers, adn Moto should have no part of it.

It's an old story, typical of companies where Marketing rules the roost and Management forgets that Products and Service are what customers buy.

So, internally, Moto needs to fix whatever and whoever let their customers down.

Hey Moto, want to sell LOTS of 220's? Easy, fix the problems with the 200, like you are doing now for the 220, and everyone with a 200 will be eternally devoted to you. Even better, to acknowledge that you did an unacepptable job on the 200 by offering a substantial rebate, say $200 for 200's turned in by customers who buy a 220.

Why do this? Well the 200 buyers are your best customers, and you screwed them (anyone out there used their Voice-Dialing recently?). Make it good, and we'll follow you forever. It may not maximize your profits this quarter, but this kind of commitment to your customers will pay dividends for years to come.

OK, time to hop off the soapbox.

Played with a 220 mockup at the local ATT store this weekend. Not crazy about the keyboard, or the size, but otherwise liked it! Need to get it in black for heaven's sake. I don't want to look like a Verizon customer!

Alright there Einstein whats your big beef with the 200? I owned one for over a year and had ZERO problems with it that weren't user error. Care to name me a problem that was the phone's fault and not yours? No offense, I have just never heard of any problems with the phone, and

I used and hacked mine EXTENSIVELY. Knew it front to back, inside and out. Always had found it to be one of the most bug free smarthones in existence.

As for the 220, my money says they sent it to best buy first, "testing the market," to see if enough people would complain about it to warrent a recall. This is normal business practice and it happens in any industry. Keep in mind companies are in the business to make money and I can't blame them. If I were moto, and 1 out of 1000 people complained about the volume, would that warrent me spending the money for a recall? Hard to say... what do you think?

Only one real problem with the MPX200 and that was hardware

The missing downleft directional control

Apart from that the MPX200 is still a great phone and still the best built to date.

I agree, Like I said before the us is a small phone market, europe is far more lucrative, so they first test it there and then proceed with the world wide launch. Us is a great place to test such a phone; lot of folks have money and they complain rather fast . Good place to test!!.

Why else would they start selling the phone over there first. :D

So we can get a good phone

Here's some odd news: Stopped in an Agent store today and they said that they would NEVER (yah, that's the word they used) get the MPx220 as a regularly stocked item and it would be via special order only. Several desk jockies there said the same thing. Haven't been to a corporate store (where they tend to know something) to confirm, but found that odd.

Now, someone on here a while back said that Corporate Sales was already selling them... No confirmation on this yet.

Thought some might be ineterested. I was checking on the recall and possible download of the latest Cingular FW.
