Guest spacemonkey Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 This must be the fastest growing forum thread ever! With posts like that I'm not surprised... On Paul's last comment, if they resolve this issue and make it clear what the terms are I'm happy with the phone capped at 10Mb/month. I don't think I'd be happy paying £25/month at their 10Mb normal GPRS package rate but with a limited maximum I just would watch streaming video or download games except when it was docked at my PC. 10Mb is plenty of data if I'm just gonna read some mostly text websites for news etc. The phone still does play movies/mp3s off the SD card, and it still does look cool. GPRS is an emerging technology and as such the charging schemes are all a bit nuts. I would hope that over the next 6-12 months we should start seeing realistic packages especially with players such as http://three.co.uk coming out with 3G networks. My biggest concern at the moment is that Orange is mismanaging peoples expectations and seem unable to provide clear definitions of how their services will behave and how they will be charged. The only technical thing they MUST fix is providing a method of measuring your usage accurately.
Guest Danlance Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 I wonder how many people will be foolish enough to see the charges on their bill, think 'oh bugger', then pay the bill anyway? Norty Orange... P I was going to say - (if you didn't manage to sort the problem out) - if enough of us worte together, probably one of the tabloids would quite like to run the story (they seem quite keen on the "Big company treats customers like dirt" stories...) Fancy appearing on Page 3 Paul? :D
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 As mentioned above, the biggest problem is that OOTB there is no way of measuring your usage. The CS Rep I spoke to had a valid point tho, there is no way of knowing whether you having used all your SMS / MMS bundle... Altho I guess you could count messages easier than counting bytes :D P
Guest strathclydezero Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 I phoned 150, they quoted http://www.orange.co.uk/business/products/...espv/terms.html to me and I got them to write in my account that I wouldn't be charged for data. I was told I would be warned the first time I went over 10megs, and I could be removed from the promotional pack with repeated offences. Unlimited my arse.
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 Not sure about the tabloids, but The Register love to run 'little person v big corporation stories' :D P
Guest pupton Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 Hey lets do a mass email to them....
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 You are all such mercenaries :D Hehe... P
Guest Joner39 Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 All those of you out there who are scared of receiving your bill: Would you like the rest iof us to auction your phones off towards your funeral costs when you have a cardiac arrest? I am happy to volunteer my services as one last act of goodness towards an Orange sufferer. May god bless yer souls and give you all the angels of heaven when ya get there :D
Guest Treadsoftly Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 Please donate the proceedings of my SPV sell-off to the 'GPRS excess usage' charitable fund. :D
Guest Gadgetman Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 Just had my first bill, 26Mb on GPRS but NO extra charge, just the basic 6 quid, so Orange are sticking to the deal as far as I am concerned. no warning .....yet!
Guest crimminsky Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 just checked my bill online, I've used 11.6 Mb since upgrading 18/12/2002 and was not warned or charged so what's the score here Paul? is it supposed to be 10Mb a day or month? I'm seriously thinking about returning the phone now whereas two day days ago I was as happy as larry. I've been waiting for an Internet browsing phone like this for years but if I've got to pay £25 per 10 Mb I'm affraid it'll have to go..
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 Weirdly, the charging for me didn't start till 16.8955 MB was used! As mentioned above, they are not legally entitled to charge, so don't worry! The worst that can happen is your bill comes in, they have charged you, you phone up and moan, they credit the amount and issue you with a warning :D P
Guest Bazz Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 They seem to let your first bill go. This must be Paul's 2nd bill.... I trust they aren't even gonna pretend that that counts as a warning since they didn't tell us what would happen if we did it again. Barry
Guest crimminsky Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 Ok, I'll calm down a bit    now but did you find out for definate wether it was 10Mb per day or billing period, If it's a day I can carry on as normal if it's a month i'm already over the limit and too scared to go within 10 feet of my phone :D
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 Definitely 10MB per 1 month billing period. This is also my first SPV bill (it had the upgrade fee on it!). P
Guest tom Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 Hrm... am I the only thinking that from the sounds of things, Orange have quite a cockup on their hands? Just that there should be such confusion over what should be a trivial matter astounds me. Differing terms and conditions, differing views from the call centre*, nothing signed on paper, essentially very little known by anyone! Is this how the GPRS rollout's going to be conducted for the next year? * Say what you like about call centres - the workers should know the base facts
Guest crimminsky Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003       thats me bu**ered then and probably most of you lot, no more downloading on the go for me. The futures not bright, the futures been capped :D
Guest phoenix Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 ok lets review they cannot charge us for excess usage, i have just read the terms and conditions and there is no mention of CHARGING over-users. Ergo Technically it is unlimited without charge UNTIL Orange tells the customer otherwise. So if they mess us about with charges to over use we can turn round and say they should have warned us
Guest Mirage- Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 As a user of the phone that pays his bill each month via direct debit I'm more than concerned that at the prices mentioned I could possibly be buggered for a month until they credit my next bill. Well it's yet to come through so we shall just have to see. Ian
Guest Gadgetman Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 Just a thought.... I'm a new (well returning actually) customer with Orange and didn't get charged extra. You guys that got charged, already existing Orange customers? Perhaps they don't want to p**s off brand new customers, but don't mind with existing ones! Or maybe it's just an age thing, you people in your 20's get hit, but they leave us old boys alone :?
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 ^ Exactly why I don't pay by Direct Debit :D P
Guest pupton Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 Just viewed my bill online and I only used 4.1mb and I thought I was downloading lots of stuff.... :D Relieved!
Guest Bazz Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 I'm a 4 year old customer and they didn't charge me on my last bill. I used 23 Mb or something like that. Barry
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 Just me then! What have I done? :D P
Guest spacemonkey Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 Just me then! What have I done? :D But that's part of the whole problem, Orange's behaviour and response to most SPV issues is completely inconsistant from one customer to the next which ends up with no clear customer expectations which causes a lot of confusion and anger. Basically Orange is totally mismanaging everything to do with this phone.
