So what does everyone do for a living then?

I am a software development consultant for the UK's largest insurer, and a mobile data specialist in a private capacity.

You guys?

Hi guys

Just bought an SPV yesterday and still getting to grips with it after my T68... for such a "Smart" phone there are some glaring omissions which Im glad to have not been the only one to spot !

* Recurrent rules for alarm times (like the Ericsson)

* SMS character counter

to name just two!

One useful thing which kept me annoyed for 5 hours yesterday was my inability to ActiveSync to my PC! Several phonecalls to people at Orange, one to Microsoft, and one to my Auntie (For sanity, not for tech support) I was still nowhere!

The solution ? Norton Personal Firewall.

Deactivated it, rebooted, and shazam, Synced first time !! It must have been blocking one of the ports it needs to Sync.

One big question I've got is Text Messaging, sometimes, when I get an SMS even though I have the person as a contact I only get their number appearing... is this something to do with not having them in the full +44 format ? Enlighten me please!

Returning slightly more to the topic (Tangent mode, off), I'm a Consultant Pharmacist for a large multiple retailer in Bournemouth - originally a Welsh valleys lad, now settled on the Dorset coast. So, I can do you a trade, fix my SPV probs and I'll cure your ailments :-)

Thanks for a great newsgroup... will be a regular visitor!

"I am a software development consultant for the UK's largest insurer"

Does that mean you could get me cheap/free car insurance :(

Anyway, im a full time student studying software engineering. I also work part-time nightshift in Marks & Spencer Warehouse.

I also run a web-hosting company which I wont mention in this thread as that would be un-professional and spam :D

And... i still havent got my spv yet !

I'm a webmonkey in London. Bored off my tits by the work, but it pays the bills. Just about.

Dammit, why is the SPV out of stock everywhere? It's *so* unfair...

I seem to be one of the few non-techie type people who has bought an SPV (and convinced my partner to get one too). I'm a psychologist. So, form an orderly line please, and no pushing :D

I'm studying Final Year Degree course in Computer Animation

I'm a up and coming New Media/Grahic Design artist too.

Hopefully when I grad, I can find a decent job in the London area. North East sucks for design jobs.

Worst comes to the worst then will go into the Music Industry, I DJ part time and as a hobby playing all over the place. Recently done Ministry of Sound in London and I produce music in my spare time.

Wouldnt mind working in a record label doing A&R

DJ,

When you graduate head for a job with your skills in the entertainment sector, good money, more opportunities, the average commercial sector stuff is dwindling at the mo.

I'm a Smartphone (and other mobile device) developer for Action Engine in Redmond, WA (yes, just down the road from Microsoft.)

We wrote the "Orange Backup" and "Orange Update" programs on the SPV. These same utilities shipped on the O2 XDA as "Action Backup" and "Action Update". In addition, we shipped the "my O2" application platform on the XDA.

I have some good contacts within Microsoft, Orange, and HTC and have a pretty good idea of where things are going with the developer program and other issues. (Some of our code will be part of the solution.) I can't say anything else right now, but will let you guys know as soon as I can.

working in paris, sw house, desktop mgt area,

working with pcs from years (tandy... sinclair zx81...)

using phones from years too (homemade at first, big antennas on my cooper and on my roof plus myriad of gsm.... lately t68i and 7650 after of course 7110 and 6310 !)

happy to see there is people "involved and interested" of smartphone development ( i would resign from my company just to go in that area)

not surprised by the lack of orange "intelligence" for marketing such a device !!! but more by microsoft "approach" !

when you know that ONE sms cost that, first thing is to be sure not to write more than x allowed caracters for that ! obvious for me that orange/crosoft techies dont'pay their phones bills themselves !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Roland of Gilead is my Name. Otherwise known as The Gunslinger. Forever on a continuous journey towards the Dark Tower and the Last Stand between Good and Evil.

Will be using the SPV as the new medium in this eternal battle and will hope to transport from other worlds: Druss the Legend, Morning Star, Jon Shannow and Waylander the Slayer, to aid me in my quest for the Dark Tower

Right then..

Anyway, I'm working for a (large) insurance broker at the mo. Generally doing a management course at uni. Computer literacy - just do it for my own peace of mind.. It is so sad looking at people who try to figure out a piece of technology and FAIL miserably.. sometimes do it myself. And let's face it, technology is now the way forward!!

The bad thing is keeping up to date with the gadgets - tooo expensive!! So you get a wkd toy once in a while (that is just toooo old of a toy in 1month time), SPV - mine this year (hopefully will be either soon updated/bugfixed or replaced by a more suitable toy).

Right, off i go into the real world...... OFFICE

Haha, I actually work for Orange... before anyone asks no I don't have any inside info/access to free software or anything like that, but yeah I did get my SPV for free.!

I don't have anything to do with the phone side of things, I'm a sports journalist (Orange Multimedia Operations), we deal with all the stuff you get as text/mms alerts and stuff that you see on the web/wap/spv sites.

I worked in the good ol' IT industry in the delightfully interesting programming sector. Now I'm at uni wasting all that nice money I earned on shiny new gadgets (well, ok, I got my SPV free on a contract and I don't drink, so not wasting as much as most :D).

I got my spv so I could play Doom/Worms in my maths/computing lectures (I do both subjects, so I get sooo many damn lectures) - so far no sign of either, but here's hoping!
