I think it might be to do with the case, there's next to no-where for the sound to come out. And when you use speaker phone most of the sound comes out of the other side of the phone, i.e. the side laying on the desk!

That's because there are two speakers - a tiny, tinny one near the earpiece hole, and a larger more powerful one at the back (hole by the mirror) used for ringtones, MP3s and speakerphone.
