My other SPV C500, which has been to HTC too, has now dust on screen, after a few days. This one is on PAYG. Does anyone have any idea if Orange replace PAYG phones as well?

My spv c500 has dust issues as well.

and i like Bronsky,  its good to have a rant , and get it out every now n then :D hehe

hope this issue really gets sorted.

I'll try ringing orange and and what they say.

Steve did bronsky mean sham as in

  1. Something false or empty that is purported to be genuine; a spurious imitation.

  2. The quality of deceitfulness; empty pretense.

Not genuine; fake: sham diamonds; sham modesty.

or shame?

I read it as sham therefore no sp mistake.

(i thought id take the liberty and mention it)  :D

I know what he meant - I just thought I'd rattle his cage and see if he came out ranting... :D

Is it likely that this will be the 3rd Generation?

.....about as likely as me getting my foreskin back

If you *really* want it back, there are operations they can do... 8)

Are they more successful than HTC's repair? :D

The 3rd Generation models have an improved seal around the foreskin, but you still have to send your equipment back to HTC and wait about a week :D

He'd better have 2 pieces of equipment, one to use and one to be with HTC, because he will need to sent it again and again :D

They should have a motto for C500:

"SPV C500 - the phone for men with two..."

Errr

I actually do have two (C500s, not foreskins) for just that reason!

5 days on and it's now leaking dust in 3 places. It's worse than before I sent it off! Luckily for HTC I'm on my 3rd SPV so I've learnt to live with the dust feature of their phones, but ex-Nokia converts must be a bit miffed by this!

Did anyone get a "3rd generation" replacement from Orange yet? If so, how's the screen behaving?

I think HTC guys or whoever does the so called sealing are just opening it, cleaning it and send it back. Like any device that has parts assembled by snap-in clips the play between reassembled components end up by becoming bigger. This might explain the bigger amount of dust after they return it.

Well, you'll still need to clean it from time to time and they won't guarantee against dirt getting in either, so I guess not!

ok!

so does this mean that if i take in my pay as you go handset into an orange shop and show them the dust, they will take it in and send me a replacement?

i would really like to know - the dust is really building up in here.

thanks.

You know what, after all my ranting I think it's phenomenal i've managed to get a thread comparing the C500 to a foreskin. It's a stroke (:D) of genius. (pardon the pun)

Perhaps they could make a C500 case out of old foreskins?

Phoned orange and mentioned the dust problem.

They said not our problem its manufaturing send it to htc

Dont think ill bother at the mo.

Is it easy to clean the phone yourself?

i too am annoyed that htc could release a device with a major flaw. Which it is imo

What happened to product testing ? Its obvious there will be dust in an enviroment the phone will be kept eg your pocket!

where bronsky? i need a rant! can we form a rant forum? lol

YAY! Just rung up orange and my phone is replaced for free as its still covered by the sales of goods act (brought the phone end of january) I didn't have loads of dust - but there is more than enough to see :D

Any way - well done orange for recognising the fualt! and great service

Orange had no quibbles about changing mine... However the girl promised thay are 3rd gen hand sets...

Just looked this morning... 48 hours and two specs of dust have appeared... so either the 3rd gen still have problems or orange didn't tell the truth....

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

I've learned never to trust the word of the Orange customer service peeps who answer your 150 queries, especially when it comes to technical queries; I've only spoken to one who actually knew anything about the workings of a mobile phone (he happened to own a SVP C500 too). If I have a question that needs more than a 'hang on a mo while I check what the customer service system tells me' response, I always ask to speak to someone in authority or a technical specialist.

I bet they didn't even understand what a '3rd gen' handset was - it's a phrase we use on this forum and I've used with my Orange contact but I'm not sure it's that widely used.

With all respect to Steve for the great work he did, I don't think there is really a solution to the dust problem, nor a 3rd generation phone. Afterall, there were dust problems with the previous SPV versions, as reported on this forum, and since a few years ago HTC had the chance to reconsider the design of their phones and avoid this issue.

I think with the SPV range both HTC and the customer are having to live and learn Perhaps they spent too long on making this phone great and not with making sure the basic fundimentals such as a properly sealed unit.

Does anyone know how we can tell which handsets are 3rd generation?

I've just spoken to OCS. The lovely lady there told me that O are aware of the dust issue, and have created a fault code for it. But she says they do not yet have stock of the 3rd gen phones. She offered to replece my handset, but said that the replacement would probably have the same problems. She also said that O have no time scale on the 3rd gen handsets - although they did in theory know of their existence.

Make your own mind up, eh!?

oh Bu**er - never mind - mine is being replaced under the one of those trading laws that mean your product shouldn't *uck up within a reasonable amount of time - which means its free so yay no dust - shame it'll be coming back -**goes to buy a case** and recomendations?

Would the replacement be a new phone?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Good point! :D

I see it this way ...

If your phone needs replaced within 14 days of purchase, then you are entitled to a brand spanking, fresh new one-in-a-box. After that, O will replace your phone with a refurbished handset only (no box, no cables, not even a battery).

I didn't ask this time whether they would replace it with a new one, but I suspect they would not have done. Obviously if the 3rd gen models do in fact exist, then you would pretty much expect to be getting it all nice & new in a box, wouldn't ya!? :D But then, for all we know, O might just get handsets only from HTC, so they would come out as a usual refurb. So really, who knows! :D

They told me to phone back in a couple of weeks. I asked the girl to take a note of what I had said, and the fact that I was offered a replacement (& got her to read it back to me, of course! :D ). So I reckon I'll do that, and take the replacement anyway & see what happens.

If it's not new, clearly it has no protection against dust, as it would come from HTC and we've seen that they can't work miracles.

If the phone is new, then I may think of getting at least a new phone, even if it will be full of dust in a couple of weeks - at least it would look better.
