Guest usdiver Posted March 23, 2005 Report Posted March 23, 2005 regarding the dust issue and cleaning out the c500 is it possible that someone could give me feedback as to how difficult it is, the process, and whether or not the lcd screen is easily accessible? Reason for asking has nothing to do with dust as the lcd screen is cracked and needs replaced. Can anyone help? I will post a more detailed topic in this forum for anyone that might can help.
Guest Pondrew Posted March 23, 2005 Report Posted March 23, 2005 What about the dedusting article linked to by Cubik above?
Guest stevewooding Posted March 23, 2005 Report Posted March 23, 2005 (edited) Called Orange - my 2nd handset I got is now covered in dust! I basically wanted to acknowledge a dust problem with them before any sort of warranty expired. Anyway, I talked to the O woman, when I explained the problem she said since you originally bought your phone from the internet, I had to take up the issue with the original vendor (something like 6 months sales of goods act) or something. So I was like... [DELETED] ...I have no idea if I have to pay or not! Even mention of my super high up officer was no use! ("That name means NOTHING to me")... I really don't know what they've written on my account! Maybe steve could have a word with them? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Sorry to hear about your problem Cheng. If (like me) you'd bought your phone from an Orange dealership or from the Orange website, then under the Sale of Goods Act, your contract would be with them. However, if you didn't buy your phone from any Orange outlet but from a third party supplying the SPVC500 with an Orange connection, your contract under the Sale of Goods act is with the people who supplied you with the phone and NOT with Orange. Technically the OCS bod is right - they weren't obliged to replace you first phone (so you're lucky they did, and probably only did so because of me asking for sample phones with dusty screens) and until any guarantees you got from the people who supplied the phone run out, Orange won't be obliged to do anything. Again, technically your only totally legal course of action is to contact your supplier, tell them that Orange has classed the screen dust issue as a fault and get your supplier to replace the handset for you. Remember that our original beef was with Orange as SUPPLIER, not with Orange as manufacturer (that's HTC!) as that's the only way they have any liability under the Sale of Goods Act. All clear..? :?: Steve (ps. name-dropping often works against you with customer service guys unless it's their immediate superior or they know them, and even then it's a BAD idea. Contacts are there to get things done if you ask them directly, not so you can use their names to get things done.) Edited March 23, 2005 by stevewooding
Guest tudor Posted March 24, 2005 Report Posted March 24, 2005 Got my 3rd generation C500 tonight. Well... I hope it's "3rd generation"! Looks all the same at my previous one, no signs of two overlapped warranty stickers. Back cover better than previous one (no rattling). Keypad seems much worse - loose keys. The phone is new, not refurbished (well, as far as I can tell...). This may be because the my phone was less than a month old?
Guest Lord Kordir Posted March 24, 2005 Report Posted March 24, 2005 Anyone know what generation a Silver SPV is likely to be? I was hoping that it won't suffer from this problem being a little newer
Guest tudor Posted March 24, 2005 Report Posted March 24, 2005 Anyone know what generation a Silver SPV is likely to be? I was hoping that it won't suffer from this problem being a little newer <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It's not really newer. It has been available from the beginning on premium contracts. Anyway, Orange do replace silver as well - the lady from OCS asked me what colour is mine, so she probably had 3rd generation siver ones too.
Guest Lyger Posted March 24, 2005 Report Posted March 24, 2005 Just thought id let you know ive had my C500 pay as you go for nearly a month now with NO dust issues i bought a SILICON rubber cover for my phone from E-BAY - Maybe this has helped :D

Guest bluesmudge Posted March 30, 2005 Report Posted March 30, 2005 Incase anyone is interested - those of you have been following this thread will know i had my first c500 replaced thanks to dust - would now appaear my new one is letting in dust quicker than the old one - This is getting a bit stupid now - i love my C500 - but im tempeded to see if orange will swap the phone for something else.
Guest tudor Posted March 31, 2005 Report Posted March 31, 2005 would now appaear my new one is letting in dust quicker than the old one <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The new C500 is faster... at letting dust in :D
Guest bronksy Posted March 31, 2005 Report Posted March 31, 2005 Come on people, why all this talk of replacing your phones. NO don't be silly, surely you can open up the case, void the warranty, blow some air inside and put the whole thing back together.. this is what is expected of you.. after all we ARE smartphone users, what an amazing device. I'm so happy with it. It's the same with my car. I bought a full featured car, it was not tested that much but it keeps letting in water when it rains. It's not a problem though. I LOVE my car so much that I will take out the engine, get some sealant, put some tape around the doors and then put it all back together again I'm prepared to do this, and live with the water in my car, just because its so wonderful :D
Guest bigfootpete Posted March 31, 2005 Report Posted March 31, 2005 Do I detect a very slight note of sarcasm? Just a little...
Guest pjam001 Posted March 31, 2005 Report Posted March 31, 2005 How hard is it to take the c500 apart to clean the screen? Is it obvious that it has been dismantled or could you get away without losing your warrantee by not telling anyone?
Guest pjam001 Posted March 31, 2005 Report Posted March 31, 2005 Did it again, missed the earlier post about dismantling. Sorry!
Guest BanziBarn Posted March 31, 2005 Report Posted March 31, 2005 Has anyone tried using that "air in a can" stuff? I blew into the side buttons earlier and the inside of the screen misted up so there is defo a way to the screen via this route - maybe a good blast of air would clean it out? :?: I've only had mine a week and its already getting quite bad :D

A quick call to Orange & another was on the way, this had dust in the screen when it arrived!! Now had my current handset for a few days & guess what? dust appeared today :?: Think I will wait a while & see what happens
Guest bronksy Posted March 31, 2005 Report Posted March 31, 2005 hands up who thinks that the '3rd generation' story is a complete lie from Orange to placate users. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, they'll replace the phone and hope people don't call back a second time. IMHO it would cost them too much to do a product recall and service all the handsets in the warehouses... they don't need to care now we've been suckered into a poor product.

There is a thread here (just search "dust") where you can find enough info on how to clean the phone, but you'll loose the waranty. I have some friends who work with Orange here in RO and I will ask them how to solve this issue. I will let you know if I can find a quick solution. Best, V.

Guest Pondrew Posted March 31, 2005 Report Posted March 31, 2005 I've suggested that a while ago :D Anyway, as an update: my "3rd generation" replacement from Orange started to get dust on the screen  <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You mean the one which had no evidence of being a 3rd generation handset in the first place? I don't agree with bronsky that Orange will just keep proving replacements at their cost without a fix, having made up a story about a 3rd generation fix. And they never said they would be recalling handsets, rather that in due course the handsets distributed would be constructed differently. How can you possibly think it's cheaper for Orange to replace every handset with dust with a handset that'll have the same problem? For far less cost they can investigate and then instigate a new process for producing handsets that won't get the problem. You do know companies are not meant to mislead people and can get into quite a bit of trouble if they do?
Guest tudor Posted March 31, 2005 Report Posted March 31, 2005 (edited) You mean the one which had no evidence of being a 3rd generation handset in the first place? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Ay, that one :D There was a note of sarcasm in the "3rd generation" bit. Anyway, how can you tell? What visible difference is there? Edited March 31, 2005 by tudor
Guest Confused Stu Posted March 31, 2005 Report Posted March 31, 2005 What visible difference is there that it's a 3rd gen phone? Umm.... Surey "not collecting dust" would be the answer to that question!!

Surey "not collecting dust" would be the answer to that question!! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> So, basically every phone is a 3rd generation one until proven otherwise :D
Guest Confused Stu Posted March 31, 2005 Report Posted March 31, 2005 EXACTLY Tudor! Every new phone supplied is a 3rd generation phone, until such time as it starts accumulating dust whereby it is automatically reclassified as a 2nd generation phone. Once it's cleaned it then becomes reclassified again as a 3rd generation phone. But which generation is my phone once I've stripped it, cleaned out the dust, put it back together and then noticed the hair I left under the screen? Is this state the soon-to-be announced 4th generation phone?
