STANDARD functionality - disappointed or not?

I purchased my Motorola MPX 200 (having SPV before it) for as much as 130 Euro. That's more or less what it is worth of. My first ones were much too expensive (SPV). By my opinion, P900 is the only SMARTphone. There are some other bricks (Treo) and paperweights arround on the market (SP2002 & 2003), but if you need something more then a fashionable toy (Samsung P400,E700) or something what an ordinary phone (Nokia 6230, T600, K700) can't offer you, if you would like to be able to change your battery on your own or buy a spare one (unlike Treo), not to forget, if you carry it arround on your own (Nokia 9... Series; you need somebody to carry it for you but slavery doesn't exist any more...) P800/P900 are only possibility to get a SMARTphone, which, out of the box, has almost anything what somebody cuold need and which is still easy to use so that I can even borrow it to my mother... You can make some functions better, add some new ones if you need them to your P900, but it is THE smartphone in a moment... even if I'm mostly using mpx200 and Tel.Me. T-918...

I'm neither lame nor clueless - just expressing my opinions as I see them. You are perfectly entitled to do the same, but there's no need for personal insults...

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

As long as anyone continues to state these are "basic" features of a standard phone, that's the way I feel.

Power windows, air conditioning, cruise control and leather seats are NOT basic features of standard cars. If you want to argue that they are, I'll take the same stance I'm taking here.

These features are not basic in that you can't make phone calls without them, however they are things that you would expect on any mid-range phone.

For me, a GPRS counter and being able to send contacts via SMS are things I would expect any half-decent phone to have. I've been able to send contacts via SMS for at least 5 years now and every phone (apart from my C500) that I've bought that supports GPRS has included a GPRS counter. Why should I have to take a step backwards to move to a Smartphone?

Smartphones are relatively expensive compared to normal phones, much like a BMW is relatively expensive compared to normal cars. However, you'd expect a BMW to have every feature that a Ford did, wouldn't you?

I already said a GRPS Counter SHOULD be on any phone with GRPS.

No, Smartphones aren't really much more expensive than any standard phone, unless you're talking about the Samsung i700 or similar series which is just rediculous.

Still, no matter what price point these phones are, we're still not talking "basic" features.

OK, I've changed the title to say "standard functionality" rather than basic, just to make myself a little clearer... As I already explained, and as you agreed, the C500 is about the same price or more than a top of the range non-smart phone - correct? So my point is that it shouldn't be missing so many *standard* features from these other phones that are competing for my cash!

I disagree, the C500 is free on most plans, it ios far cheeper than, say the K700.

Phew, some people do get arsey don't they??

Personally, I was extremely disappointed with the whole SPV functionality out-of-the-box.

I would be rather excited about my new gadget, relishing it's MS OS, telling all who would listen all about it's apps and speed. Then I'd notice folks with rather dated Samsung / Nokia / Sony Ericson phones BT'ing porn to each other, swapping ringtones etc, etc.

Then the damn thing would inexplicably crash, hang or otherwise fail to do anything at all. This, of course, meant a 5 minute restart procedure.

I soon stopped showing it off, I can tell you. It will do an aweful lot. But only once you've spent, maybe, a hundred more quids on 3rd party apps!

We are not, after all, discussing *basic* phones here. A smartphone should be the all-singing-all-dancing & smartest cookie on the bar in any pub, straight from the box :D Any purchased apps should compliment the integrated functions or extend it's capabilities. So, xenophobe, your analogy relating to cars seems to fall on it's bum somewhat. We've already bought the BMW ;)

Now you can all shout at me for a bit......

Your preconception of what a Windows Smartphone should be is idealistic banter. As has been stated a number of times, it's just an OS that lends itself to end-user configurability. It is not designed out of the box to do everything in the world, it just gives you a platform to add the functionality that you want. Is it supposed to come out of the box with every gadget known to man? Reading some people's thoguhts here, you'd think that it should.

xenophobe - The C500 is not without faults but I agree with what you say. You will never please all the people all the time but IMHO the C500 is the best smartphone available.

Other people think the P910 is better, that's fine by me, we all have different needs but the C500 suits me. If it doesn't suit you, sell it and get something else.

Constructive criticism is fine but whinging? Well, there will allways be one or two thathave nothing better to do.

Just my 2d's worth

Surely the poll question is wrong given the context of the subsequent thread. It's not so much as adding more features but refining what's already there?
