C500 GPRS really slow on O2

How fast is GPRS for you on O2 Pay As You Go?

I can send MMS fine, but browsing the web is hopeless. I can get to http://mobile.o2.co.uk and it loads the top bar (O2 Active title and the drop-down box), then it freezes.

Actual websites just time out, as do Java applications with network ability.

I'm using the HTTP proxy at 193.113.200.195:8080 and the payandgo.o2.co.uk access point. The actual connection does seem to be there, just it's too slow to retrieve any data. Changing the proxy port to 9201 and attempting to access WAP pages has the same result - although I did manage to load http://wap.google.com after about 8 minutes of waiting (!)

I'm in a major metropolitan area (Central Manchester) so coverage shouldn't be a problem. I could use CSD/dialup WAP fine, beginning to wish I hadn't changed my tarriff over to GPRS.

Any ideas what could be causing the problem?

(Reposted from Help forum as it got no replies there)

I've had similar problems, but ever since I started using O2 GPRS, rather than just with the C500 - it seems to just stop working or go very slow at random. I just checked and it took about 15 seconds to load Google, which from my experience is pretty good going. Sometimes I find it helps to a) clear temporary internet files, and :D reboot the phone.

Personally though, as O2 PAYG refuse to allow POP3 email access or MSN access, I'll be putting my Orange SIM card back in as soon as my credit runs out.

What area do you have problems in BigAl.

Orange GPRS always seems to work OK for me.

Just tried http://mobile.o2.co.uk via Orange GPRS and it loads no problem. Ditch O2 and get an Orange SIM - I've never had any problems with GPRS :D

I mostly send text messages and the price on the O2 deal is just too good to make it worth me changing, 300 texts for £10 vs 12p a text (or paying £15 and waiting until the evening)

Will try e-mailing O2, but don't expect to be able to get a decent answer. On the off chance I do I'll post it here.
