Guest Confucious Posted May 12, 2005 Report Posted May 12, 2005 Update: The reason I had all those duplicate contacts was not because of AS4 I believe it was because I had synced my Motorola A1000 with my laptop and the wonderful s/ware that came with that had stripped the + from all the internationally formatted numbers so they weren't recognised as duplicates. D'Oh! So it looks like AS4 works - sorry if I put anyone else off trying it!
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted May 12, 2005 Report Posted May 12, 2005 Sorry but that just isn't true. I installed the UIQ stuff the other day for one of the senior guys, and you can sync the phone Calendar, Contacts etc to any Calendar etc - not just your local one. It's been capable of that for years. Easy to setup and use. Reliable. In terms of functionality AS is a VERY long way behind IMO. Not something i've ever had to do, so you are probably right in that respect. From my own personal experience AS is far better integrated into your PC than any other suite, particularly when it comes to browsing files on the device. Smartphone is lacking in some functionality, these are fixed in WM5 though. On the PPC side its fairly comprehensive.
Guest Confused Stu Posted May 13, 2005 Report Posted May 13, 2005 (edited) Just to add my two pence worth on the "Is ActiveSync any good". For the past couple of weeks my C500's been back at HTC getting fixed (scratch remover fluid + alcohol = oops!) and I've been using the other half's old phone - Siemends SL55. The first thing I had to do was sync it up with Outlook to get my phone book on it. Oh my word! Never have I appreciated the seamless and quiet way in which ActiveSync works! After ages downloading the Siemens sync software, and installing all of it even though I only wanted about a quarter of the package, I actually got the pleasure of using it. After half an hour of trying (eventually solved by turning off the PC & phone at the same time rather than separately!) I eventually got the phone to copy over my 70 odd contacts - all numbers, a few with two or more, a couple with addresses. The phone was locked during the sync.... which took over 10 minutes! After all that, the names and numbers are across, but the address fields in Outlook don't match up with the address fields on the phone, so they don't go over! I've uninstalled the software and vowed to wait for the temperature in hell to get below 32F before I'll even try that again! edit: C500 due back in my hands tomorrow - you wouldn't believe how much I've missed it after trying to live with a non-Smartphone for a couple of weeks! Guest boffergeld Posted May 13, 2005 Report Posted May 13, 2005 (edited) It seems that it doesn't work as it should. Had the same problem with the dublicated contacts. However, 5 minutes later it told me that there are dublicated contacts in my list and asked to remove those. So, I hope everything's fine now. I bloody hope it is. The next thing is my emails. While I never had problems syncing my mails, after installing AS4 I have: I am snycing 4 folders. Fortunately my emails are not deleted completely but they are deleted in Outlook. Nontheless they are still on my Smartphone (forutnaltely)! Activesync tells me everything is fine: "Synchronized". Nothing changes, even if I remove, rename, copy a folder or whatever. Still my email is shown on my smartphone and not shown in Outlook. ??? Edited May 13, 2005 by boffergeld
