I'd have thought that too Hax - & while they factor it in to what they can actually offer you on the system, it's clear they're also hugely variable in terms of how much trouble they'll go to trying to work the system as well as they can for you. That's the aspect of it I find bizarre - each time I've renewed in the past 2-3 years it's taken speaking to 3-4 different people (each offering different things) before I got the 'best' deal I could.

They have really lagged behind on this one. They should have had the M500 out months ago. Not that there is anything better for the size available (IMO), but when a version of this device with WiFi and 128Mb ROM (with WM2005 of course :) ) comes out, the Magician will be outdated.

I'm really struggling here. I want that damn phone, and I would like to stick with Orange. I could wander into town today and get the MDA Compact from T-Mobile. Something is stopping me and I can't quite figure what it is. Surely it can't be any kind of brand loyalty, not to Orange. HELP!

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I have just the same problem... :)

I think i will be jumping ship though. Orange are RUBBISH!!

I've never bothered "renewing" as such simply because of the hugely attractive deals that you can get from 3rd party vendors.

Keeping my number isn't overly important to me - most of my communications are done through e-mail/msn/other instant chat programs these days - and sending out an e-mail to all of the people in my "contacts" list is no effort at all.

EDIT: Only reason I've stuck with Orange for as long as I have is because my family (mother, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc) are all on Orange because they all got O contracts in order to have cheap calling between us all. To a small part, that's my fault as I was the first out of us to get a mobile - and I chose Orange as my network.

C550, bigger screen? The M500 has the bigger screen.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Sorry, i shouldnt post when im that tired :)

I've got a C500 at the moment; and im upgrading from that, hence me saying bigger screen, better camera, but nothing really 'new' to me... Plus i *REALLY* want wifi, being able to connect to the net in campus would be super, plus being able to have notes from lectures and stuff, and msn (for when i get bored)...

Decisions! :D

I have invited one of my Orange contacts to view this thread, lets see if anything comes of it!

I'm quite happy with the Orange network and infrastructure, but the customer service is beyond a joke now. For example, to get the kind of service that used to be standard, you now have to be a premier customer. What a rip off.

Does anyone know the answer to this one:

If I were to start a new contract with T-Mobile for example, would I be able to port my number from Orange in a months time when my contract is up? Or would I need to wait if I want to keep my number?

I just contacted Buymobilephones.net, and it looks like they've run out now. They said the have a few at their shops which they can get sent out but it will take a few days.

Hopefully by that point OSPS might have got themselves sorted out so I guess I'll leave it now.

I'm not sure why so many people are surprised by this cock up. EVERY time I have been an early adopter of an Orange phone their product launch has been shocking. It happened with my original SPV and my e200, they don't know what they are doing at all.

My SOLE reason for staying with them is Line 2 as I need to separate my personal and business calls and It seems that they will not properly support that on the m500.

All in all I think the best thing to do in this situation is to back off until the dust settles and they get their act together on this device. This does happen as you can quite easily order any existing phone from them with zero hassle.

Of course the other thing to do is to set up an orangeisrubbish.com and make a huge deal out it all, but at the endo of the day there are more important things to do in our very short summer months.

Looks like i'm sticking with my e200 for a little while yet

Right.....

Can I change my contract to Pay as you go and then port my number back to a pay monthly account?

I think you mean you have to be corporate, thats probably right, Im premier and let me tell you i get no service from them at all. I cant believe its the same network i joined 5-6 yr ago.

It's also mildly amusing that they seem to think they're still head & shoulders above most in terms of customer service. I suggested going to Three to someone in retentions the other day, and he laughed at me - "do you know how bad their customer service is?"

Either the whole industry is appalling, or Orange have got very complacent & delusional.

Problem is orange is not needing to entice new people with cheap phones they rely on network coverage to pull in the customers.

I phoned upgrades and still no idea on when its to be available but he is going to dig around. he sounded narked. i think he has had a few calls like this now!!!!

Nearly there orange come on.....

sorry mate seems where not nearly there, he is a email i have received

Dear David

Thank you for your email regarding your pay monthly phone.

It is disappointing to learn that you wish to complain regarding our service.

Firstly, I would like to apologise if your previous emails were not responded to. We do aim to answer all incoming emails and sorry if this was not achieved.

Whilst I understand your dissatisfaction that you are unable to upgrade to the SPV M500, unfortunately this phone is only for Business Customers only and we have no plans at present to introduce this to our domestic accounts.

Whilst, we try our best to fulfil our customers requirements, we can not always offer customers exactly what they want. We do have certain procedure we must adhere to.

If you require further assistance please do not hesitate to contact Customer Services on 150 from your mobile or 07973100150 from another phone to speak to a representative who will gladly assist you. The department is open 24 hours a day.

For further information on our products and services please visit our website at www.orange.co.uk

I trust my response addresses your query and reassure you that we do value all our customers.

Kind regards

Wendy

They'll get there, as they always do but their not giving me many reasons to stay with them at the moment.

Can I change all my existing numbers to PAYG then take out a new contract instead of upgrading?

EDIT: blimey Davey that was impressive you managed to post that message 4 times in a row :)

The laughable thing about Wendy's reply is that it's orange.co.uk that is feeding us the information that the M500 should be available!

As for Orange relying on superior coverage to pull in customers - well, that certainly isn't the case round here, I live reasonably central in London yet still they struggle.
