Guest dazza12 Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 I must congratulate Orange on rewarding their most loyal of customers - the 11-16 year olds that have made Orange a fortune by downloading the Crazy Frog ringtone countless thousands of times. Not us £40-£100 per month power users - we should be grateful for what we're given. And even more grateful for the various services they've taken away - Wildfire, Everyphone, Orange Assistant etc. I'm just thankful I can still make calls.
Guest hockeyump Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 So what if I wrote a program that SMS'd (or dialled) your signup each day at say, 00:30? That'd be kinda cool, and pretty easy. P <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Why write one when there is already one out there for free. RJV SMS Scheduler SP2003 can be found on Airfagev's site at http://www.airfagev.com/downloads.asp?cat=RJV%20Apps&NAV=2 It allows you to schedule up to ten messages at a time - great for "remembering" distant relative's birthdays
Guest Zone-MR Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 How do you activate the extra by texting? The orange website only gives instructions for doing it by dialing 450.

The orange website only gives instructions for doing it by dialing 450. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I've been sending the word access to 247. Don't think I got that from the Orange website, though. Once you send the text, you'll receive one back saying something like "thanks for subscribing, your bundle will start in one hour time" Then, (if it works), an hour later, you'll get another text saying your bundle has started. See above for where it's been going wrong at times, though.
Guest azamsaghir Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 Is this just unlimited access to Orange World only? Or can you access Orange GPRS (orangeinternet APN) unlimited until 23:59:59 on day of purchase? The latter would mean including audio streaming, MSN etc of course? Rgds azam

In that case sending a message at, say, 4am should be OK. You should get the confirmation by the time you wake up and then you'll know whether it's activated.

I'm a massive PAYG data user (can't get contract) and this would seriously influence whether I got the imate SP5 or not
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 I'll give it a go, watch this space! P

Guest tsutton Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 Yeah, that's the site I found when researching, but they're asking for £16 The company I found *might* be able to sell it for £9.99. And that doesn't involve hacking up your SIM cards!

Guest Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 I'm pretty sure it's the internet APN, though I'll check tomorrow, I'll also see if there's any difference if you activate it by phoning rather than texting. Out of interest, as regards radio streaming, I went to the bbc/radio 5 website, and with images turned off (it's just too slow with them), trying to stream the audio was not a realistic option. How is it you guys do it, as I'd love to give it a go.
Guest Confucious Posted October 13, 2005 Report Posted October 13, 2005 Have just ordered one of the £1 SIMS from the link in this thread (Thanks Tony) - Ideal for my C550 which I no longer use but will now be ideal for data access when I'm out I can just pay for a day - pity it takes an hour to activate so I have to decide in advance though. £30 a month sounds a lot but it's not when you see the contract prices (over £80/month IIRC) but for me the advantage is I can do this on a day to day basis. If I'm out for the day and want internet access I can have it, that's likely to only be at weekends and certainly not all of them, might only be 1 or 2 days a month so a bargain. It would be better if access was instantaneous so I could take my phone and only activate if I needed it rather than have to know an hour in advance but still a LOT better than contract.
Guest Posted October 13, 2005 Report Posted October 13, 2005 (edited) Just checked the settings I on my Jam, and it is the internet APN I'm using it with. UPDATE: Today, rather than texting to activate it, I've phoned to activate it, and the text you receive is different. It appears to activate it immediately. I can't test it by checking my blance at the moment, as I've just lost signal, but looks promising. Edited October 13, 2005 by Guest
Guest Phil Lee Posted October 13, 2005 Report Posted October 13, 2005 Thanks for pointing this out. I recently terminated my Orange contract and switched to PAYG. There's a lot of extras on there that could prove useful and save me some money.
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted October 13, 2005 Report Posted October 13, 2005 Looks like that's the way to go then! P

Guest tsutton Posted October 13, 2005 Report Posted October 13, 2005 Have you got hold of one of theese yet? See my earlier post in this thread... it's coming in about 9 days. Once I get the details & price, I will post here.

Guest magic_peanuts Posted October 13, 2005 Report Posted October 13, 2005 It kinda makes you think you'd be better off on PAYG instead of contract doesn't it! Well, it really is starting to look that way. I pay £50 a month for which I get: 300 (5 x 60) minute anytime minutes Unlimited GPRS Free evening and weekend texts and because I topped up £50... I get £25 back next month :o And I don't have to lift a finger, a DD covers the £50, my paid for minutes are updated at 3am every Monday morning and my unlimited GPRS at 3am every day, all thanks to a free SMS scheduler. I can't get a contract due to my bitch of an ex screwing up my credit rating, so for me I'm finally glad that a network is taking heavy use PAYG customers seriously. I do feel for you contract guys though, it really is time they launched a flat rate GPRS tariff. Now if only I can convince someone to test out that SMS Scheduler on a WM5 phone for me... :(
Guest Harley69 Posted October 13, 2005 Report Posted October 13, 2005 THIS SUCKS BIGTIME!!!! I think it's about time Orange started to look at their contract customers. Between my wife and I, we spend about £80 a month on contracts, and are getting less all the while for our money. Customer service is crap! when we have called in the past with problems (when you eventually get through), they either don't know what they are on about, or just pass you from pillar to post, to the point that you just give up the will to live!!! If you get no joy from them, and threaten to leave, they just say "That's up to you" and basically aren't bothered! Well I have been with Orange for quite a few years now, but I can honestly say that I will be leaving them when it's time for my new contract, the same as the wife has already done! If you want to keep us and others like us (your true loyal customers, who give you a guaranteed monthly income, not PAYG customers who switch to who ever offers the best deal that week!) it's about time you started to offer us some incentives and shook up your customer services, or you will lose us all to pay as you go, and then.... WE CAN CHOOSE NETWORK OF THE WEEK TO SUIT US AS WELL!!!!
Guest magic_peanuts Posted October 13, 2005 Report Posted October 13, 2005 Between my wife and I, we spend about £80 a month on contracts, and are getting less all the while for our money. I beg to differ, you don't get less, you get what you signed up for, and if you don't like it, guess what? You can switch networks too! ...not PAYG customers who switch to who ever offers the best deal that week! A sweeping generalisation - I know plenty of people on contract who switch networks on a yearly basis and many people who stay faithful to one PAYG network. I understand the frustration you must feel when a PAYG customer gets a better deal than you do, but it's about time, we've had the short end of the stick for quite a while now. Contract customers get a massive subsidy off the latest phones, for example the D600 (not my kind of phone but thats irrelevant), currently retailing for around £300 RRP SIM free, is free with 11 months half price line rental (£16 a month). You could buy this phone on contract, sell it on ebay, pay off the contract and still have £50-60 left over. On that basis, I'd argue that Orange make more off me each year than they do the average contract customer. You really haven't got a lot to complain about...
