Guest gilesjuk Posted October 22, 2005 Report Posted October 22, 2005 It's just greed, the bean counters must have pointed out that wifi would mean less money from GPRS data and would also make the handset more costly.
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted October 22, 2005 Report Posted October 22, 2005 That doesn't make sense tho, the M1500/M2000/M5000 all have WiFi. I'm as gutted about the lack of WiFi as anyone, but i'm probably willing to give Orange the benefit of the doubt and think they did their market research, and most customers didn't want WiFi on their Smartphone (yet!)... and battery life and cost were more important! P
Guest dazultra2000 Posted October 23, 2005 Report Posted October 23, 2005 Rumour has it that at the latest orange roadshow they had the C600 with wifi (as in, live handsets browsing the net over wifi), and they weren't sure whether it was going to remain in or not. This suggests to me that it will exist in hardware, but be disabled. Not entirely sure what the point of that is!
Guest argh Posted October 23, 2005 Report Posted October 23, 2005 That's possible, but unlikely. There are two models that are pretty much identical except for the wifi module being present. It wouldn't make sense for them to pay for the wifi module and then not use it. A number of people seem to have seen Orange people waving wifi enabled C600s in front of them though at various presentations. I hadn't read any reports of people seeing wifi-disabled C600s. It seems odd that they would do this and then release a version without wifi. Wouldn't the slightest change in hardware require a complete retest? *clutches at straws*
Guest mcwarre Posted October 23, 2005 Report Posted October 23, 2005 plus Orange to start billing for 0800 calls in Dec. I can't see any reason to stay........... I haven't heard of this before. Any further info? There goes my two calling card numbers ;)
Guest fozzie Posted October 23, 2005 Report Posted October 23, 2005 I haven't heard of this before. Any further info? There goes my two calling card numbers ;) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It's appearing on bills this month. I first heard about it on one of the Orange lists :D
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted October 23, 2005 Report Posted October 23, 2005 The production Faraday devices do NOT have the WiFi hardware in! P
Guest fergus74 Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 (edited) Just had an email from Orange stating that the C600 is coming out at the end of November, but they didn't answer my question about wi-fi.... They didn't seem to know anything about the M3000 either! Edited October 25, 2005 by fergus74
Guest dreamsurfer141 Posted October 26, 2005 Report Posted October 26, 2005 I'm slightly disappointed in Orange for choosing the Faraday over the Tornado. It could be that they considered WiFi to be a business tool rather than a consumer orientated function and didn't want to face the added support costs regarding this so they chose a more customer friendly solution. The unfortunate thing is that Orange doesn't make money on WiFi and they also sell the lucrative GPRS service which I wouldn't use as much if the phone was WiFi. I hope that they have a business orientated\complete mobile solution lined up for business customers that maybe the Power Consumer can afford. The biggest annoyance is that their latest advert on English television with two people dancing in harmony is a little different from many users experience of using Orange. The introduction of the Faraday rather than the Tornado doesn't reflect what we have been calling our for for many months...
