Guest iwilliams Posted November 4, 2005 Report Posted November 4, 2005 Iam about to order a orange m5000 and also a qtek 8310 The qtek is a 2.5g phone and of course the m5000 is 3g. Will my orange sim work in the qtek 8310 phone? How does this all work? Thanks
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted November 4, 2005 Report Posted November 4, 2005 The Universal has both 3G and standard 2.5 capabilities. I use my Orange SIM in my JarJar EDIT Will your SIM be on a 3G account or on a standard 2.5?
Guest Confucious Posted November 4, 2005 Report Posted November 4, 2005 The M5000 comes with a USIM (3G) but it *should* be backwards compatible - has anyone tried yet?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted November 4, 2005 Report Posted November 4, 2005 I would be surprised if Orange have altered the hardware so not to make it 2.5 compatable. In the manual what does it say under specifications? Also check out Start\Settings\Phone\Band and see what is shows, mine displays GSM Band and also UMTS Band
Guest Confucious Posted November 4, 2005 Report Posted November 4, 2005 The original USIMs issued by Three worked in some (but not all)2/2.5G phones but then changed their USIMs so the later ones will NOT work in 2/2.5G phones but will work in non Three 3G phones - they did this to stop people roaming on O2 all the time. Orange have no reason to do this but you never know. Is yours a USIM Ash? or just a SIM?
Guest shadamehr Posted November 4, 2005 Report Posted November 4, 2005 (edited) Never realised a UMTS, 3G SIM was backwards compatible and could be used in a none 3G device... I'm about to try exactly this now and let you know. What I DID think was the case, was that you could put a STANDARD SIM into a 3G device and use it for basic services, but not the other way round - I'm about to test now... So long pause while he charges up his 6230i phone briefly to put the 3G sim in, and... DAMN ME FOR A FOOL (and the O2 CS bod too back when...) But my O2 3G Sim card works fine backwards compatible in my Nokia 6230i... So all this week I have had my i-mate SP5 I never bloody knew that??? Oh DOH! Gonna do some REAL HARD MMS send and receive tests with it in and I will let you know, but it should work. /me slaps head, and curses the O2 bod who said this coulodn't be done... EDIT: Right - I just put my O2 3G UMTS SIM card into my i-mate SP5... Sent a little animated MMS from my i-mate with the 3G sim in to another phone... And it arrived fine (well kind of - the animation file format was such that my destination test phone, the 3G Nokia 6680 with a none 3G sim in now) couldn't play it, so I got the normal "visit the web to view it" message. But the long and short of it was that it worked - well buggar me with a wet broom shank in August... Cheers mate for highlighting this. Edited November 4, 2005 by shadamehr
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted November 4, 2005 Report Posted November 4, 2005 Is yours a USIM Ash? or just a SIM? Just a normal SIM, had it for a few years now.
Guest mthomas50 Posted November 4, 2005 Report Posted November 4, 2005 I have tested my M5000 sim (3G) in my C500 (not 3G) phone - connected to the Orange network straight away and works fine ;) M

Same here - which means that the Customer Services rep was wrong. She told me the USIM would not work in my C500 and so I should have a PAYG SIM to keep the C500 working when I didn't want to carry the M5000. :x
