that's just the gps receiver. you still need to buy the tomtom navigator software.

Tomtom says that the software is not transferable between purchases. That means whatever Tomtom software you see on eBay are illegall.

You're better off with buying a legit copy from authorised outlets and it will give you full support & upgrades in case you need it.

TomTom can say what they like, and I'm sure they wish it wasn't possible to re-sell their software.

Fortunatly copyright law offers protections - see "first sale doctrine". A purchaser is permitted to sell a legally acquired copy of a protected work WITHOUT PERMISSION from the copyright owner. Fortunatly the rights given to you by law cannot be revoked via a EULA, hence any restrictions TomTom may wish to impose on you regarding the sale of the software are not legally binding.

But you already know that the copy of TomTom on eBay are illegal as the seller just re-copy it on blank CD and selling it all the time (look at feedback, lots of feedback about copy software)

You are right that the term "first-sale doctrine" stems from US law, however it is implemented in international copyright law under different names. I believe in European law it is known as "Exhaustion of Rights".

Of course if the guy is not selling the original product but a copy, it is a clear case of copyright infringment.

Having recently invested in a GPS unit for £50 I'm now looking at buying software. So far the best prices I've found for TomTom Navigator, software + UK maps only, are:

Hey guys - Goo News - I bought the tomtom navigator 5 and Bluetooth GPS receiver from Innovations UK and also got an exclusive version of the tomtom plus speed camera database download for free - this is much better than the speed camera software widely available free.

...AND it was only £163.99 - inc VAT - BARGAIN BOYS.
