I am finding my M5000 runs like a total dog. For example a few minutes ago the backlight came on all on its own. I watched the phone for about two seconds and nothing happened. It then said "incoming call". I flicked the screen around, waited another 2-3 seconds for the screen to reorientate, and pressed Answer. It missed the call, even despite the person leaving an answerphone message - i.e. it missed it despite the call involcing a full length ring.

This phone is so damn slow it seems it can't even provide basic call answering, which was the main reason I threw my original SPV away a couple of years ago. It's disastrous that Microsoft can get to v5.0 of the OS and still have such appallingly basic and terminal faults with their software. This is a lovely handheld, but as a phone, I'm not sure it doesn't suck really badly.

Is anyone aware of some tricks to get the phone running faster? Are there any applications running in the background that can be disabled? If I can't answer calls reliably, it'll be going back to Orange.

At risk of telling you something you already know..... have a look in the Memory panel, under Settings, System. Look in the running programs tab and close apps that you don't currently need running.

Interestingly, O2 customers with the XDA Exec get a full Task Manager app which shows a lot more than just the "Running Apps" that we get, and so they get a better idea of what else is running. Dunno if we can port that app over to the M5000.

I personally wonder if it is Orange's customization thats slowing the device down so much, as there homescreen seems rather sluggish!

I turned the orange screen off and regualry check the system memory and the phone runs like a charm.

Only problem is with programs, even though you click close (the X top right) it still runs in the back ground. This is why I regualry close it down. But then I did this on my c500 all the time. Just habbit really.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the Orange Customised screen. I turned that off as soon as I got the phone. That could well have an impact on the speed too.

I turned the Orange home screen off within hours, it looks awful and slowed the phone down.

I looked at the list of running apps and only ActiveSync was listed. For me the things that are proving irritating are:

1. Inability to answer calls. This has happened only once, but as I've only had it one day, it's not a good sign.

2. Time to rotate the screen - this is usually 1-2seconds, often longer. If Skype is running, it takes 5+ seconds. The phone is barely able to support Skype in my view.

3. Time to do basic things like send a text message. e.g. if i open a contact and click Send Text Message it takes 1-2 seconds to open the screen.

Lack of responsiveness seems to be all pervasive with this device.

The universal can handle anything with lightning speed as long it is written for WM5, normal Microsoft tactics..

if you install only WM5 programs all should run really fast, i have only desktopbreeze a few games and loads of sms emails en contacts synced .

Great device!! Just off error reporting!! that helped me a lot!!

Also checking running programs is clever.. especially after syncing.

I noticed in the forums here and in other forums that most of the people who complain (80+%) have non wm5 compatible software installed.

Dont use wisbar advance if you want a fast ppc, wisbar advance desktop is WM5 compatible they say but wisbar advance itself isn't!! WAY TOO BUGGY and slows the universel down increddibly.. lets hope for an update soon.

Also remember people who have problems with the universal or other phones go to forums to ask/complain. It is not a fair thing to make statements about the device based upon these statistics.

I have several very happy and pleased friends who don't go to forums, why should they if the universal does what they wanted!

So i would deduct that only 10% of universal users go to forums, and only about half of these have probs (that is say 5%) and 80% of those have problems because of not wm5 software. So say 80% of 5% is 4% that is thus only 1% of all the phones that maybe have valid problems!!!

ONLY 1% faulty??.. wow the universal is a great phone/pda!! and that 1% is in my eyes way to high, it is much lower i think in reality!

hehehe

Not to sound too surprised or anything... but you are all right. Turning off error reporting and the Orange homescreen plugin increased the "responsiveness" of the phone hugely.

Yes, it has worked for me too :-)

So that's a top tip then - to speed up your M5000 turn off the error reporting and the Orange theme.

The problems for me are not non-MS software I think. I have only installed Skype and that isn't running most of the time.

Thanks dvl!

This is going to sound stupid, but how do i turn the orange screen off, i've looked everywhere for an option to do this! If i try to change it in the today setting it seems to automatically revert back as soon as i come out!
