It appears that there is no way to get the keypad lighting to stay on more than about five seconds. Incredibly, there is no setting for this (unless it's in the registry somewhere, but i-mate won't help with that). Here's my IM conversation with i-mate tech support:

You're now talking to Hussam from 'Device Support' The topic is : Not Provided

Hussam> Welcome to Club i-mate. My name is Hussam and I am a Club Advisor. What can I help you with?

Guest> Hi Hussam

Hussam> hi

Hussam> how may i help?

Guest> I have a question about MSFP

Guest> Is i-mate going to make it available to your customers?

Guest> (this stands for Messaging and Security Feature Pack for Windows Mobile 5.0)

Hussam> yes sure

Guest> how is this going to happen?

Hussam> it will be released in a rom upgrade in early 2006

Hussam> maybe in january

Hussam> or february

Guest> so I can update my device from my laptop?

Hussam> yes sure

Guest> okay, great

Hussam> and the upgrade will be for free

Guest> cool

Hussam> for club imate members only of course

Guest> I'm a member

Hussam> great

Guest> (but my IMEI changed because I had to return my first phone and get a new one)

Guest> another question:

Hussam> go ahead please

Guest> the keypad lighting on my SP5 goes off after about five seconds -- is there any way to make it stay on?

Hussam> well this also depends on the light

Hussam> as it has a light sensor

Guest> i have tried it with the sensor on and with the sensor off -- it doesn't make any difference

Guest> is there a registry tweak that i can use?

Hussam> could you please go to start>settings

Guest> ok

Hussam> do you see "power" option

Guest> i see "power management"

Hussam> go there

Guest> ok

Hussam> don't you see the option to adjust the keyboard light?

Guest> no

Hussam> what do you see in that page?

Guest> okay, from top to bottom:

Guest> Main battery

Guest> Backlight timeout on battery

Guest> Backlight timeout on AC

Guest> Display timeout

Guest> Light sensor enable

Guest> --- that's all

Hussam> the backlight is for the screen only

Hussam> but can you check it out?

Hussam> because the device is new and may be they added the option to it

Hussam> check it out

Guest> okay, i just set it to never,

Guest> but the keypad already went off -- but screen backlight is still on, though

Hussam> i see

Hussam> so there is no other way

Guest> so in other words, there's no way to control this?

Hussam> unfortunately

Guest> that's really bad!

Hussam> or maybe i don't know how to do it :)

Guest> well, i've been reading in forums and so far nobody knows! :D

Guest> this is very bad design -- I really need those keys to be lit when I'm in my car at night

Guest> can you send this issue to the engineers and get them to provide a fix?

Hussam> unfortunately there is no such an option

Hussam> i will suggest this to them

Guest> what about changing it in the registry?

Hussam> this cannot be done from the device directly

Guest> i have a registry editor on the device and also a remote registry editor on my laptop

Hussam> but i do not recommend you do it

Guest> okay, I understand that you recommend against it. that is on record. now, can you tell me how, even though you do not recommend it? ;)

Hussam> we only support what is available

Guest> I understand.

Guest> Thanks for your help, have a good weekend (where are you, by the way?)

Hussam> we are based in Dubai

Hussam> you are most welcome

Guest> thanks again. goodbye

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi guys!

Now after one month of using Qtek 8310 I found more difficult using my phone at night (as I live in Sweden and at winter daylight is reduced heavily) cause keypad light goes after 5 sec! Very hard to use esecially in the car.

Is there any tweak?

Is there any sign that some fix will come out?

Very, very bad...
