Using a Wizard as a USB modem

I'm going away to my father-in-law's for Christmas. With no internet connection there I decided to get my MDA Vario setup as a modem for my laptop, mainly to allow my wife to check her e-mail. I followed the instructions in the Word file in the USB Modem folder on the second CD that came with the phone. Unfortunately I couldn't get a connection. Here's what i've done to resolve the problem.

1. Make sure ActiveSync is disabled on the laptop

2. Make sure USB ActiveSync is disabled on the phone (in ActiveSync Menu > Connections)

3. Connect the phone to the PC and open Modem Link (Start > Programs > Modem Link)

4. Activate the modem

5. Open Internet Explorer on the phone to initiate a GPRS connection. Once the connection is active, stop data transfer

6. Open the dial-up connection on the PC

The GPRS connection will then be dropped on the phone (Big G shown on Start bar) and the modem will connect successfully. Steps 5 and 6 seem to be the important ones. If I don't initiate a GPRS connection from the phone the dial-up connection fails to connect. If I do, it works fine.
