Guest nyillustrator Posted January 12, 2006 Report Posted January 12, 2006 Did you get a chance to test Wolf/Quake/Doom on it yet? Thats teh deciding factor for me.
Guest nickcornaglia Posted January 12, 2006 Report Posted January 12, 2006 No but send me a link to the download and I'll try it for you.
Guest Confucious Posted January 12, 2006 Report Posted January 12, 2006 encee - nice review. How does EVDO speed compare to UMTS? Not that it's an option for us of course ;)
Guest smeg36 Posted January 12, 2006 Report Posted January 12, 2006 While I've never personally used UMTS, EVDO's advertised speeds are much faster than UMTS. The max speed of a UMTS connection (currently) is 384kbps. The max speed of EVDO is 2MB. I know I have personally got speed results in the 968kbps range, which is obviously almost 3 times the advertised speed of UMTS. My average download speed is around that of a max UMTS connection though.
Guest Confucious Posted January 12, 2006 Report Posted January 12, 2006 As we all know Max speds are rarely achieved - if your average is the max of UMTS it begs the question as to why we don't have EVDO here in the UK? Was it just a ase of the wrong technology being chosen or are there technology limitations? UMTS speeds make the internet useable on my Universal but you can never have to much speed! Thanks fo the reply smeg36
Guest smeg36 Posted January 12, 2006 Report Posted January 12, 2006 Originally I would say that GSM was a way better technology than CDMA. Even now in most aspects it is. I think the main reason CDMA/EVDO is able to get faster speeds is because it's older and has had more time to develop. However, recently (here in the US of course) all the good devices are either coming out on CDMA (Verizon) first, or exclusively. My Samsung i730, what I consider to be the best PPC/Phone in the world, is only available as a CDMA device. The Treo 700w came out on Verizon first. The Motorola Q is supposed to come out on Verizon first. I'll be interested to see what the future brings in the CDMA/GSM question in the US. As a side note, are the pictures in the review not coming up for anyone else? They have been coming up for me when I read it, but they aren't today.
Guest nickcornaglia Posted January 12, 2006 Report Posted January 12, 2006 I had the photos on my personal hosting. My Bandwidth was exceeded. I'll need to resolve that later today. My apologies.
Guest nickcornaglia Posted January 13, 2006 Report Posted January 13, 2006 I'd just like to say that I have installed PocketBreeze, and PocketPlus and found the homescreen very adequate to include all pim info and other information needed on a daily basis. (Plugins can be nested within PocketBreeze). Gotta send the device back and didnt have time to try Doom/Quake. But if someone can port it to a calculator these days, I don't see why some savvy programmer/hacker couldn't tweak the current PPC port to fit the smaller screen. Sorry I couldnt try it out for you....but life calls sometimes. ;)
