ROM update and backing up

Im planning on updating the rom on my vario to either the new vario or o2 ... or maybe imate ... but thats deside the point

I want to keep all my messages (sms, mms and emails) and wasnt sure where they are stored on the phone

Or is there a program that can back them up automatically?

Is there anything else that people have forgotten to backup when they update ... i know its really fustrating so i dont want to fall into the trap :)

when you update the rom evreything is deleted.

I don´t know which programm to use for saving sms or mms..
