hide the battery bar on the home screen?

If you mean the System Tray that has (on mine) Battery and WiFi indicators then yes - just remove the Init_Tray.lnk from the \Windows\Startup folder (move it, then it's easy to put back)

Bear in mind that the tray is used for other indicators too - such as TomTom and probably a few others. If you remove the tray the other apps will create one automatically when they put something on it - so it can mess up the layout of your Today screen a little bit
