Well my JAMIn finally arrived this morning.

I've held out for this type of device for a while and can't wait to see what it can do.

While I do know quite a bit about Smartphones, I have to admit I know absolutely nothing about PPC phones.

I'm hoping that some of you kind-hearted gurus might take the time to give this noob (and any others) advice on what software to install and what customisations to make to get the most out of this device.

I've seen in other posts people talking about spb-this and VITO-that, but I have no idea what you are talking about.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Wow... so I can take you through what i've got on my device that may be of interest to you?

I use the following (name - where from - why?)

Today Screen

SPB Diary from http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com - it gives you a much more functional today screen layout for calendar / tasks etc.

Resco Today Plugin from http://www.resco.net - free with Resco Explorer, gives you a good at a glance view of memory status, and shortcut icons to fave apps etc.

Card Export II from http://www.softick.com - in beta at the moment, but lets you use your device as a mass storage device (i.e. like a USB stick, without ActiveSync to get to the SD card)

Games

Zuma and Bejewelled II from http://www.astraware.co.uk - very addictive, love em!

Resco Sudoku from http://www.Resco.net - well, it'd be rude not to :)

Worms from http://www.Handango.com - great way to pass the time, wish it had GPRS play!

Traffic Mania from http://www.PDAMill.com - again, great if you're 'otherwise engaged' :D

Applications

ActiveTrace from http://www.VitoTechnology.com - if you are of an active disposition (or like me, have installed it for snowboarding), it connects to your Bluetooth GPS and logs your activity. Free to MoDaCo Plus members!

EGress from http://www.garishkernels.net/egress.html - currently giving it a go as an RSS reader, NewsBreak is also a good one, and Free to MoDaCo Plus members!

eWallet from http://www.iliumsoft.com - if I lose my wallet, this will save me (and it stores all those usernames / passwords I always forget!). Also use the PC companion app.

GPS Tuner from http://www.GPSTuner.com - the daddy of GPS applications!

Royaltek BlueGPS - management tool for my data logging GPS.

Rough Guide London/Madrid - from http://www.VisualIT.co.uk, cos i'm going to Madrid next week, and London cos it's handy! :)

MemMaid from http://www.dinarsoft.com, weirdly, not using this much now I have SKTools!

mToken from http://www.choung.net/mToken/, if you do any remote management via SSH of servers, this is a must!

OMAPclock to run my Prophet at 240MHz!

Opera from http://www.Opera.com, for when Pocket IE just won't cut it!

Resco Photo Viewer from http://www.Resco.net, means I can carry all of my precious pics around with me!

Pocket RAR from http://www.rarsoft.com, so I can uncompress RARs I occasionally get mailed.

Resco File Explorer / Registry / FTP from http://www.Resco.net, THE DADDY of File Explorer apps, with free today plugin too, a must have!

Rudeo MCE Control from http://www.Rudeo.com, let's me remote control my Media Center via WiFi.

MyIP from http://www.SlipStreamSolutions.co.uk, allows me to ping servers and look up IPs from my device. FREE to MoDaCo Plus members.

SKTools from http://s-k-tools.com/, the ultimate Pocket PC swiss army knife. Must have!

Sprite Backup from http://www.spritesoftware.com/en/ just to be safe :D

TCPMP from http://betaplayer.corecodec.org/ so I can play movies on the go!

TomTom - nuff said :D

SPB Pocket Plus from http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com - gives me the useful Taskbar Battery Indicator, and turns the close button into a real close button... useful, although I exclude a few apps such as Messaging. I turn all the other SPB bits off.

SOTI Pocket Controller from http://www.Soti.net, to allow me to control the device from the PC, and take screenshots easily etc.

SPB Weather from http://www.SPBSoftwareHouse.com - currently testing this as it integrates with SPB Diary. Pocket Weather seems to be more featureful however, and is FREE to MoDaCo Plus members.

Hope this is useful :D

Oh, and I install as much as possible to Storage Card!

I have backlight timing out after 30 seconds on battery, 1 min on mains, screen timeout 1 min on battery, 2 mins on mains.

I turn off incoming beam receive which also saves power, and have brightness set at 50%.

I turn Button Lock on.

I use SKTools to disable the input panels i'm not using, and to set the default input panel to Phone Pad (gets rid of the 'Phone Pad Won't Load' issue).

I reg tweak to enable the GPS and Policy control panel applets.

I tweak my soft keys on the today screen to be 'Messaging' on the left one, and 'New SMS' on the right one.

I set the Camera to 2MP SuperFine.

I installed the very nice 'dopod black' theme.

Think that's about everything :)

Great...thanks for the reply. With all those apps, it's lucky you have a 4GB SD card.

Can you advise me on where you got it?

Chucky.egg pointed out that they are selling them on Ebay. Shame they don't seem to be selling them locally to save the £20 shipping, but then again I guess you'd have VAT if it were local.

paul,

with all those apps loaded, how do you find the performance compared to a magician? I am looking for new toy and i'm torn between the Prophet and the Tornado.

you're an Audi man, give me a car analogy for performance of your dopod with all that on it against similarly loaded devices you've had - both Phone and PDA based.

i'm not too fussed how it handles, i like both form factors but do you think the bigger screen gives a better view of the road?

I find the performance very good. There are a few waits when running things like messaging first time after a soft reset or whatever, but in general, it hasn't troubled me.

The excellent battery life, even when overclocked, makes it a winner for me.

The Tornado probably feels faster, but then it doesn't do as much does it :)

I have always switched back to Smartphone from PPC in the past, but the Prophet, with it's half decent camera, WiFi and extra hardware keys, is the first one that's making me stick :D

Day one of JAMin ownership has left me with mixed emotions.

I'm starting to miss the ease of use of my C500. I'm sure I will get over it as I learn how to use the PPC.

I might be wrong, but PPCs don't seem to be all that customisable. I had the timewise home screen on my C500 and it was perfect to have links to all those recently used programs spread across the top.

I am facing one large problem at the moment. The only PC I have is a work PC, which has Activsync 3.7.1 installed on it. I had no problems exploring my C500, but much to my disappointment it will not recognise my JAMin at all :) Unfortunately as I don't have admin rights, I cannot install any new software on my PC. Any suggestions on how to get around this?

Also, is there any way to display the contacts in FIRSTNAME LASTNAME format instead of LASTNAME, FIRSTNAME? That is another feature I miss about my C500.

Also, is there anyway to switch back and forth between portrait and landscape mode without drilling down through so many menus?

Sprite has been released for WM5 PPC now!

All Windows Mobile 5 devices need ActiveSyhc 4 and above i'm afraid!

Contacts format is FIRSTNAME LASTNAME for me, that's not PPC related!

Finally, you could map the hold function of the Comm Manager button in 'Buttons' to switch orientation.

Thanks Paul for taking the time to answer this poor noobs questions. Much appreciated.

Have another one for you (or anyone else).

Have a hard time fiddling with the sounds on the phone.

Can you set the volume of each type of notification individually (ie Ring, Text, Email, Reminders, etc.), like you can on Smartphones? I've found where you can change the actual sound, but not where you can set the volume. I hope individual settings are possible.

Also, any idea how I can get rid of the 'click' sounds when I open a menu and the 'beep' sounds when i hit the keys on phone pad?

Thanks in advance.

Guest chucky.egg

You can't set the volume of the notifications individually - one volume fits all

To turn off the clicks and beeps (still keeping reminder and notification sounds on) go to Start - Settings - Sounds and Notifications, and then untick the "Events" check box. I've turned off Screen Taps and Hardware Buttons too.

Hey Chucky,

Unticking the Events worked a charm to turn off the menu sounds.

However I noticed I still can't get rid of the beeps on Phone Pad without turning off all the reminder sounds, which I don't want do as I need my reminders.

The only solution thus far is to mute my device when typing a text message.

Surely there must be a tweak to get rid of the beeping on phone pad?

Cheers

  • 4 months later...

Speaking of notifications etc....

I have another one, how do you turn off the vibrate or sound notification that lets you know an SMS has been sent. I quite liked knowing that it has been successfully sent on my C500 but I''m happy with just a visual, I dont need the sound or vibrate!

There must be others who are just as annoyed by this as I am.
