T-Mobile to shake up UK Mobile Data market?

Hmm indeed this appears interesting. Maybe they're testing the site at the moment to see if the package applies correctly.

The price is right, so it should relate to that magical bundle we're all anticipating ;)

just checking it out now... sounds too good to be true!...

T-Mobile site is slow today :s ...........

What would be really great is if someone at T-mobile actually knew what this option was. Surely there must be someone who knows someone who knows what it's all about? I've added it to my package, and it's applied already, but I'm too scared to try it in case I get charged for the data.

On a rather interesting note, since applying the bundle, I have been online on my phone, and no data from my 6MB bundle has been taken off. If I remember correctly, the data usually shows up as being used right after you finish a session.

Bye bye Orange, hello T-Mob!

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I'm guessing there will be many uttering those words!

For the record, I have now moved to T-Mob from Orange (after a good few years) as Orange IMO no longer offer value for money (and this is from someone who has the very rare ED50 plan that Orange are so keen to dispose of)!

I still have a few months to run on that contract too but T-Mobiles offerings totally blind anything O can come up with, so much so that I am willing to run the contracts alongside each other for a short time even though I have no intention of using O again!

For anyone considering the move, I am very impressed with T-Mob customer service so far and the value is second to none right now :)

I have just checked my T-mobile data usage on the website again, and I can now confirm that I have not been charged for my data usage yesterday. My 6MB bundle is still at 6MB, and in the recent calls summary, all of the data usage is listed with £0.00 charges. I used over a MB yesterday streaming music from my pc with Orb to test my theory.

,Mar 14 2006, 14:26]Well, if our sources are to be believed, T-Mobile will announce - with some fanfare - a £7.50 per month flat rate data usage plan! Likely subject to a fairly relaxed 'acceptable usage plan' (1GB seems likely

no, then it's not flat rate.

Flat rate = no limits at all.

I have true flat rate for UMTS in Germany and I used sometimes, when I was travelling a lot in given month, even 4 GB a month and I always get the same bill (= total lack of any limits).

Keep in mind: true flat rate has no "acceptable usage" or "fair usage". If such clause is present in the agreement then it isn ot true flat rate but a scam.

Obviously I would love to see flat rate for UMTS/EDGE/GPRS also in UK... but we must be careful not to fall for tricks of operators.

1Gb is as good as flat rate for most people.

Call it what you want - I'd be happy paying £7.50 for up to 1Gb. The most I used when I had free access was 70Mb - although this will go up with push email you would still be hard pushed to use 1Gb on a device such as a Universal.

20kbps = 20000 bits per sec

20000 * 60 * 60 = 72000000 bits per hour

72000000 / 8 = 9000000 bytes per hour

9000000bph = 9 Meg an hour...

I just got this reply from another forum...seems like good news ;)

I've been using the qtec test since the WWE version came out and now the iMate Rom on tmobile uk.

I've had push mail working for an entire month of my contract now, and my data usage dropped by at LEAST 10mb a month. I mainly use the web for an hour a day surfing bbc news, the register etc. I have the push mail enabled from 6am until 6pm. using I use about 32 of my 40mb, this month I only used 16mb. I was syncing every 30 minutes on the earlier ROMs during the day, so I has been an amazing improvement.

The other good news is my battery life has increased by a large factor with the iMate rom. On an evening after just GPRS usage (no wi-fi) I had 98% battery, the best I had managed before was approx 70% so I am very very happy.

I don't use the phone very much, only about 5 minutes per day so obviously this helps my battery life too!

By the way yes the GPRS keeps the constant connection while in standby, and wakes the phone a little like a text message.

I am confident my findings are accurate, I read in the exchange server blog direct push works by opening a http request and waiting for a response or timeout. There is little overhead in this, I believe the battery overhead should be little more than having GPRS connected permanently (or between the times you use direct push)

Hope this is useful!

Cheers - I was thinking it would be better to use than a POD Cast... you can listen live to so many stations....

Not bad value really.

I was going to be heading T-mobile's way anyway for 40Mb/month - now I'll be running!

I just don't understand Orange anymore - they've gone from being a respected, value for money company with good customer service to the worst-run business I've encountered.

The T-Mob flex options seem good as well. Think Ill get a compact II on T-Mob flex and flog it on eBay. With unlimited data I'll soon have push email up and running (provided O2 release AKU2)

;)

T-Mobile coverage is non existent at home, but I might be tempted to get another contract with them to use as I work away from home a lot. Turn my Orange contract down to the cheapest talk plan and txt bundle for weekend use.

Decisions, decisions!

I'm fairly certain that I read/heard somewhere that T-Mobile are going to be putting a lot of investment in sorting out network issues this year, so that more people have a decent enough signal in the home to not need a landline...

Well as I said earlier I am changing over from Orange to Tmobile as In my opinion Orange CS has gone down hill and fell into the puddle of mud at the bottom.

I just spoke to the TMobile business sales guy and said he had absolutely no idea about this new flat rate plan, but I can still take what is available now (which is already about a third cheaper than Orange) and when this new tariff comes out he will move me onto that at no additional cost.

Sounds like a good deal to me, and by the sounds of it TM has got their act together.

Lets see what next week brings, hopefully a brand spanking new Vario.

Only HALF right mate.

As under UK LAW (and that's the important bit - LAW), companies ARE permitted to describe, under certain conditions, a service as "flat rate" or "unlimited usage" and still have a "fair use limit"

The rules for when and how they can do this are specific, but you CAN in UK law, under some conditions, have a "flat rate" service or a "unlimited usage" service, that does in fact, have limits by way of a "fair use cap"

I trust that clarifies a bit more...

I was just looking on the T-mobile Self Service website, and under my additional allowances and services for one of my phones that isn't on web'n'walk I had the option to add a web'n'walk option for £6.38 ex vat per month. That's £7.50 including vat.

Might be adding the 40Mb web'n'walk bundle. Anyone want to try adding it and transferring more than 40Mb to find out ? ;)

If there really is an unlimited bundle for £7.50 I'll ditch my ED50+access pack on orange ASAP.

I'm sceptical because it is such a huge reduction from the existing rates.

As someone who uses the mobile almost exclusively for internet access I'd be looking at the lowest line rental deal available. I'm a bit miffed at just missing out on some very good FT750 deals. I wonder if it can be added to the £7.50 per month T-mobile SIM only tariff?

Guest redvers

I suspect you will be able to add it to ANY existing tariff, in the same way you can add a 6Mb bundle to any tariff currently. The main difference is if it is built in to the tariff (i.e. with the new Web 'n' Walk variants based on the new Flext/Relax plans) then it gets factored in to the monthly costs of your contract, allowing dealers to give a better handset discount up front/at renewal.

Am I getting confused, or did I not read on here (or in a similar thread about it - perhaps on Mobiholics), where knowledgeable T-Mobile peeps stated that from 1st April, if you take out this new Data offer at the point of ordering the tariff itself, the £7.50 charge ALSO benefits from the 25% introductory reduction discount?

Did I read that somewhere?

Guest Confucious

I think the 25% discount refers to the voice plan - I'm thinking of the flex plan where you can get flex25 (normally £25) for 18.75 where you can use voice/text and SMS up to £60 value (eg 200 mins + 200 texts) but you can use mor or less voice/texts and the odd MMS which would suit me perfectly. Together with unlimited data at £7.50 would save me a fortune over Orange.

I'll get the Compact II and sell it in eBay to cover the remainder of my Orange contract.

All I need now is beter T-mob coverage and for O2 to release AKU2 for the Exec (they are draging their heels a bit!)

Guest xspyda

Yep, flex25 is the one I dumped Orange for. So good is the value that I have moved over with 8 months remaining on my contract ... and not only me, but the missus too!

I too went for the Compact and am selling it on eBay. I tried to get on with it but the c500 blows it away to my way of thinking.

If I can replace my GPRS bundle (£5 for 6mb) with the 'unlimited' GPRS for £7.50 bundle when it's released, I think I will have the ideal phone plan - something that O were not able to offer me.

Only problem now is prising my number away from O so I can take it with me! ;)

The only way you'llget your number is by paying off the remainder of your contract with O which I would do but my number isn't worth keeping - the one I wanted to keep I had to give to my brother, it's a long story.....

I figured as much - but that means paying my normal monthly rate for absolutely nothing - whereas at present (paying it off monthly) I still get the benefit of the inclusive minutes I receive each month as part of my plan.

A win win situation for Orange, and not really an option I want to take as they have already had enough out of me (another long story). :?:
