smt5600 text won't input?

Just got a refurbished SMT5600 from cingular (which may be the problem) and for some reason just yesterday it stopped inputting text of any kind. I can still dial and enter numbers into text messages or notes but no t9 or abc style inputs. So far I've tried removing and replacing the battery and looking around for any settings that would have something to do with it (no luck) but that's about it.

Is this a known issue? Would an updated rom work?
