SMT5600

I use an unlocked SMT5600 on T-mobile in San Francisco. After a recent trip to New York, my phone no longer connects properly to T-mobile. Sometimes it sees the network, sometimes it doesn't. Oftentimes it just wants to connect to Cingular, but the long and short of it is that I'm sudenly getting almost no connection, ever. I'm not sure what happened, but I'd like to at least manually set the network, rather than relying on the Automatic setting. The problem is that my phone does not allow me to change the network selection mode in the Settings=>Phone=>Network Selection screen. The only choice available is Automatic. Does anyone know of a way that I can enable manual network selection? TIA.
