Guest awarner [MVP] Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 A very in depth review My first impressions were I WANT ONE NOW but reading further I'm not so sure :? The fact it only plays mpg4 videos is worrying but the fact that the duo memory stick is only 16MB gets me very worried  My 64Mb card is almost full of apps and a few small vids. So how many spare cards would you need to carry? 12MB on board memory that will be used up fast. Overall I think it has some very good features but the memory stick problem is enough for me to rethink. I'll play safe and stick with my trusty SPV ;)
Guest Yousaf Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 p800 wont require app signing on any uk network - orange just wanna milk money from the spv as its their own handset and wanna milk money. im gonna keep my spv but im definately looking more forward to the p800 the only real crap point abt this phone is that they have stuck 2 using the memory stick duo but they are gonna release bigger versions pretty soon or so they say.
Guest HelloDave Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 p800 wont require app signing on any uk networkHow can you be so sure - this feature is available on the P800 and Orange will have problems justifying app signing on the SPV if it isn't on the P800 as well. Remember other networks will be releasing HTC SmartPhones very similar to the SPV in the near future. they have stuck 2 using the memory stick duo but they are gonna release bigger versions pretty soon or so they say. That's what they said about the Memory Stick and I still haven't seen one above 128Mb (and that took a long time to come out). You can get 1Gb+ CF cards now (equivalent to Memory Stick I suppose), and 512Mb SDs (equivalent to Memory Stick Duo). What is it with Sony insisting on using their own formats when other, more popular ones are just as good? Although Beta did rock, but that's an exception ;)
Guest Yousaf Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 well 2 be honest i cant be a 100% sure but no symbian based phone on any uk network has required app sighing - 9210. 9210i, 7650 so why is there gonna be a sudden change with the p800. as for memory sticks, thats the only dissapointing thing that there is no high memory versions of it but one can do nothing but wait for sony to release high capacity ones as they have publicly promised in press releases.
Guest HelloDave Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 no symbian based phone on any uk network has required app sighing - 9210. 9210i, 7650 so why is there gonna be a sudden change with the p800. Correct me if i'm wrong but I'm not sure the 921x family or 7650 had support for app signing? I would have said the 9210 was much more of a niche product than the SPV, and more like a computer anyway, so the networks wouldn't really have made much money out of app signing for the hassle it would give them. The 7650 only has 4mb RAM so even if it did support signing would users bother buying apps when they can only fit one or two on the phone?! Compare this to the SPV and P800 with (in theory) unlimited memory and app signing starts to look more attractive to the networks...grrrr!
Guest Yousaf Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 92Xx and 7650 im not sure but ill find out some concrete info on app sighing for p800 (on orange) im pretty confident this will only be an issue with the spv as its oranges own handset and the security excuse doesnt hold water. but in th mean time checkout this screen dump
Guest pupton Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 please ignore if this has been posted before but this gives a good idea of the size of the p800... http://news.com.com/1601-2-961985.html :?
Guest Shuflie Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 Nice screenshot but why has it got a row of icons for numbers etc. along the top? Doesn't the P800 have a keypad?
Guest pupton Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 I think that it has a removable clip on keyboard that partially covers up the display when installed.... Paul
Guest Shuflie Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 How would you sidestep and shoot at the same time then?
