Guest Kayleigh Posted December 1, 2006 Report Posted December 1, 2006 (edited) I know that this might be a bit off topic, but I'm considering purchasing a Zune. However, I've heard about a lot of the issues, and I was wondering if it might be better to wait for the 2nd or 3rd generation Zunes? Or will Microsoft issue patches to fix those problems and update features (like with the iPod)? I don't have Vista so I don't have to worry about compatibility, though. I'm kind of new to this whole high end mp3 player thing. I'm currently packing a Creative Nomad IIc (discontinued), and have had it for quite a few years now. That thing has no features at all (it plays music, but only holds 30 songs, and that's it in a nutshell), so I don't know if the so-called problems with the Zune would actually bother me. Just wondering! EDIT: Also, does the Zune Store allow you to import songs into it like iTunes does? I have a lot of CDs. Edited December 1, 2006 by Kayleigh
Guest oblivionx Posted December 2, 2006 Report Posted December 2, 2006 I have vista rtm version. And I cant get zune to work. I followed the instructions. Software is in fine, driver is in fine. But when I start up the zune software it cant find the zune. Any ideas?
Guest darth ludicrous Posted December 3, 2006 Report Posted December 3, 2006 Paul, your instructions are flawless. I found it hard to believe that MS overlooked the fact that Vista early adopters = Zune early adopters - why wouldn't RC1 or RC2 work with Zune? Even Zune Tech support tells me that Vista doesn't come out until January. They were actually confused why I would be asking for Zune Vista drivers. I have a GREAT "looking" Zune I have been staring at since I purchased on release date. Now , I finally get to use it. I for one am tired of Apples dominance and arrogance telling me where I need to buy my music. I have no faith that they will get it right, while MS has purchase exclusivity in the Zune, my money is on MS to open it up down the road. I will finally buy music online rather than purchasing my cds at the local record store. Thanks for posting this patch - you have my gratitude. Darth Ludicrous :)
Guest markdotpeters5 Posted December 3, 2006 Report Posted December 3, 2006 Good work fella! I'll be trying this when I get mine tomorrow :)
Guest markdotpeters5 Posted December 4, 2006 Report Posted December 4, 2006 zune sw appears to just hang when I connect my Zune :)
Guest markdotpeters5 Posted December 4, 2006 Report Posted December 4, 2006 and if I plug my Zune in without having started the SW first, it just perpetually searches for a Zune.
Guest markdotpeters5 Posted December 4, 2006 Report Posted December 4, 2006 Did the usual dance of uninstalling the device / resetting device / rebooting, now it's working. Just hope it's more reliable from now on!
Guest GridGI Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 Vista RTM user, it worked perfectly, thx! I also have some suggestions for those that could not get this working on the first try: 1. Check for Zune folder under Program Files, if present you have it installed properly if not navigate to Windows/System32 directory, locate cmd.exe, right click and click "Run as administrator" and execute the installation msi file again. 2. OK, so you rebooted and nothing happened, try again navigating to Program Files/Zune directory, select right click Zune.exe, select Windows XP compatibility mode and check "Run this program as administrator" on the first run, you will see a message "you must reboot". You can uncheck the admin option after the first successful run. 3. Windows cannot locate the driver - make sure you select an option for manual install, selecet Program Files/Zune folder for driver source and the install will be successful. Great FAQ btw, I'm loving my Zune. Also if you'd like to watch movies on your device they must be wma I think. I use Xilisoft Zune Video Converter 3 to convert DivX and AVIs to Zune format.
Guest markdotpeters5 Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 Out of interest, why do people keep going on about video converting software, why don't you just use the Zune market place, as it converts everything for you :)
Guest nabeed Posted December 8, 2006 Report Posted December 8, 2006 Thanks for the tutorial, although I've used your patch and the msi installer just rolls back again. Also, I do not get any "elevated permissions" with CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER. I was wondering if anybody could send me a patched msi since I am experiencing so many problems? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Nabeed

Guest manbot Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 ok i have a problem, about halfway through the installation, it suddenly stops and tells me that C:\users\name\appdata\microsoft\zune is a shared file and deleting it will stop the sharing. Then whenever i hit either continue or cancel, zune software suddenly stops and tells me that it closed prematurely because of an error. any help guys?
Guest IceB8 Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 Hey guys.. new here.. I just bought my Zune and used the patch which was really easy to get through.. but when I open the software and attempt to get into the marketplace it says can't connect to zune. try again later. error code: 2. contacted support and was notified it meant that i had exceeded my downloads for the day. but it was the first time i ever attempted to log in! then she notified me it was a result of windows vista. i'm running vista rc1 build 5600. one of the reasons i bought the zune was for its ease in downloading from the marketplace. any ideas? thx
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted December 20, 2006 Report Posted December 20, 2006 The proper Zune Vista app is now out! http://www.zune.net/en-us/meetzune/software.htm Finally! Includes a new firmware update too... P
Guest evader13 Posted January 4, 2007 Report Posted January 4, 2007 Hi im having trouble getting my Zune to be synced with windows vista. I noticed someone else posted a similar problem is there any way to fix this problem? I did successfully install the program. I even got the Zune to work as a storage device. Guest bneg82 Posted January 9, 2007 Report Posted January 9, 2007 Hey guys i went through all the steps to get zune on vista but when i tried to run it i get an error of "wmvcore.dll has a file version of 11.05600.6276 where 11.0.5721.5145 was expected. Any body got any ideas how to fix this?
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted January 9, 2007 Report Posted January 9, 2007 You can just download the Zune software from the Zune site now... the official release is now Vista compatible! P
Guest alicats12345 Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 hi, i get the same problem as bneg82 (i get an error of "wmvcore.dll has a file version of 11.05600.6276 where 11.0.5721.5145 was expected). i have reinstalled zune several times, with both the official installer, and the custom installer from the patch on this website. i always get the same message. Can someone attach a copy of wmvcore.dll as the latest version , or is there something i can do to avoid the message. thnkz ali
Guest markdotpeters5 Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 Oh sod it. I just nuked my rc1 installation to try a fresh install of xp as my zune won't even work on my xp machine. Then i read this thread whilst the install was going. Now i'll have to re-install vista again, them again next week when i can actually buy it. Damn you microsoft! :)
