Unlocked C600 not working with Sprite Backup

Any idea why an unlocked C600 (using either the Modaco ROM or the unlocked Orange AKU2) still doesnt work with Sprite Backup. According to Sprite you need a signed Orange version of their software - why? If my phone is unlocked surely it should work?
