I have no prob with them blocking P2P, IM or VOIP as they are excluded but FTP isn't - it could just be system probs or maybe someone has just screwed up - either way we still have a lot to thank T for when it comes to data pricing! hopefuly they'll sort it soon1

Sorry if this is the wrong discussion to ask in, and i'll be more than happy if you could move it into a more appropriate section.

I'm trying to download Linux on torrent, and the download speed is terrible, i keep getting max of 2 KB/s or less, and the seeds are high (firewall is off on t-mobile connection) - ~ 1,000 - And I was wondering if I need to portforward or something, that will increase the speed?

I'm using a usb modem provided by T-mobile. Web'n'walk, paying 30 pound a month, and it's connection speed is 1.8Mbps and 3GB per month.

Please help, as I am relatively new to web'n'walk and really like to finish off downloading linux.

why not just do a direct download from a mirror? Torrents are all well and good, but that 3G a month you have is both downloads AND uploads, so it will get exhausted pretty quickly.

Yeah, agreed, use a mirror.

3Gb a month, ouch. Most linux Distros are 4.8Gb, DVD Images. The only one I know of thats small is Ubuntu, and well theres no point going on about how useless Ubuntu is.

Most distros have a CD version.

I like Ubuntu

I could do a direct download from one of the mirrors, but the reason is that, I would like to test it on torrent, and I would like how much do you all get from torrent or direct http download, in other words, the top speed?

Hmm - I rate Ubuntu pretty highly too!

Why do you two like Ubuntu? Is it the only distro you've ever used? I find it buggy and annoying (Most problems are caused by my Hardware and the fact its Debian), as well as being slower then Suse.

I've tried alot of distros, alot are rubish. Ubuntu isn't anywhere near the worst, I just prefer non-debian distros. My fav being openSuse.

A few reasons I dis-like Ubuntu:

It is dependent on a Internet Connection, it lacks to much software from the Install CD so you have to download and install everything you need after.

It is very hard to install the Kernal Headers

When I last tried Ubuntu the nVidia Driver Package was corrupt, killed my X.

It insists on using bcm43xxxx Driver Module for my WiFi Card which doesn't support my card so I can't use Ndiswrapper.

I do however like Ubuntu for these reasons:

It is very user friendly unless you have a configuration issue (Suse beats Ubuntu by providing YaST for Config)

It looks good

Its aimed for People coming from Windows I believe which means more people discovering a reliable and fast Computer Experience without Spyware and other Nasties. (Don't get why it doesn't include Wine though?)

I've tried a lot of distros, Ubuntu works best for me.

It is dependent on a Internet Connection, it lacks to much software from the Install CD so you have to download and install everything you need after.

I have no issue with that - I'm nearly always on a fast connection. I'd rather have a smaller install, then download the software.

It is very hard to install the Kernal Headers

Can't you just use synaptic or apt-get?

When I last tried Ubuntu the nVidia Driver Package was corrupt, killed my X.

One of my machines is a Nvidia 6600 card, and works fine, with Compiz.

It insists on using bcm43xxxx Driver Module for my WiFi Card which doesn't support my card so I can't use Ndiswrapper.

Isn't this sort of getting a bit OT? - While I'm sure you guys who are clever find this very interesting do you not think that the lounge is a better place to have this discussion?

Just a thought...

True, I wont discuss it anymore after saying this. I agree with Paul's point about the Kernel Headers. Also Suse is a 34mb Download for a Net Install which is what I usually do, downloads what you need as you install so you don't have to download it all after your up and running

Ok back to the Topic:

I have since upgraded to Plus and now can access everything once again. SSH and FTP. So it must be Port Blocking. Its also been noted that Google Mail's POP3 servers can not be acessed on normal web'n'walk now. Can anyone try that?

Hi guys just a quick question. I'm currently looking at T-Mob WnW contracts and can't decide which option is the best. I plain to mainly use the contract for Live Messenger and texts as opposed to calls. On one side there is the Flext 25 deal with WnW Plus at £37.50 a month which should cover all my texting needs and definately covers messenger. On the other is Flext 35 with WnW Plus at £42.50 a month, which would definately cover the texts. As I plan to use the phone for messaging i'm undedcided which is the deal to go for. Are those people having problems using Messenger on WnW standard just having these problems because they're not using the offical messenger programme? Or are T-mob definately restricting access to this on the standard WnW? I know I could just get Flext 35 with WnW standard and see how it goes, but if I then have to upgrade to the Plus WnW then my bill will stand at £47.50 a month which is too high. So, are people who have a full legitimate copy of messenger having problems on WnW standard or is it just those who have downloaded non-legal editions? Please advise!

W'n'W standard precludes messenger - I can't use it at the moment but if you are goung to use it then get Plus! If it is something you need get the option that allows it - simple!

Thanks for that Confucious - I was already aware of what was and wan't allowed under the various WnW deals, I just wondered as I asked a similar question a while back and Paul advised me to go with WnW standard to start off with as he/others had never had a problem accessing I.M. As someone else mentioned on here though, I guess it's only fair to pay the extra £5 a month for the Plus version as T-Mob have been good enough to offer us decent, actually useable data deals for some time...and not taken the Orange route of crap deals and removing access to Messenger! The T deals are good enough, i'd feel a little guilty using services I shouldnt be on the cheaper deal if I was allowed to use them for the extra £5.

P.S Confucious didn't you state that your messenger problems may be to do with that copy of WLM that ''fell onto your phone''?! :P Thanks for the info anyways, a fountain of knowledge as usual

It's WM6 that somehow found it's way onto my phone - If I could get it legally I would.

You summed it up quite nicely - although I occasionally logged on to Live Messenger it's not something that I am particularly fussed about and have no problems now it's not working. If it is something you want and use frequently then you should pay for it, I'm like that with software - I have a few bitsa of pirated s/ware but only stuff I use so infrequently it's not a problem if it goes and I often get pirated s/ware to try but if I end up using it I do pay for it, I have legal versions of everything I actually use (apart from WM6!) so while I'm not squeaky clean I do have a clear concience!

The other advantages of pro are:

Use your phone as a modem

HSDPA

Streaming

As I'm getting an Ameo HSDPA is of particular interest t me now but my brother is leaving the country and his contract has W'n'W plus so I'll have his SIM - not sure what I'm going to do with 2 contracts tho :|

What phone are you going to be using? If it supports HSDPA then plus is a better option anyway.

HSDPA? I had HSDPA on my Standard Web'N'Walk account. At least thats what I thought the H ment when I was recieving data

I believe the H just means you have HSDPA reception, a few people managed to get it added to the standard W'n'W but they were the lucky ones who got in before T realised it shouldn't be added to Standard!

I've ordered the MDA Mail which arrived this morning, e-baying it this afternoon though so I can put in a bit extra and get a lovely new Vox  Sadly no HSDPA for me but i'll live quite frankly! Likewise using the phone as a modem isn't much of an appeal to me as I have free broadband, and just swapped my laptop for a desktop so don't think i'll find a use for it. But as I say i'm happy to pay the extra £5 a month as I will be using Messenger quite a bit (it's a god send on the train journey home :P )

Confucious, likewise a good summary. I have a similar stance to you-if it's software i'll be using frequently it's only fair to pay for this (provided the cost isn't a form of extortion!). I do have a few copied things but as you say, not things I use often and I certainly wouldn't be bothered if I couldn't use them. Seems some people are a bit narked about having to pay the extra £5 a month for WnW plus, I just don't get it. Everyone knows the terms and conditions, rather than bemoaning the fact that t-mob have now wised up to this and put a stop to it, people should be thankful they were allowed to get away with this for as long as they were. And contrast T-mob to Orange? Orange remove WLM from the phone, state no IM is allowed to be used-at all. Not, 'you can use it for a little bit extra a month', just no you cant use it at all.

Just to confirm my messenger problem was NOT due to port blocking. Got my sim in my shiny new Athena and can access IM again without a problem.

Begening to wonder if I have HSDPA as well as it seems a lot faster tgan my Universal did on 3G!

Phoned T-Mob today and upgraded my data plan - what a pleasure talking to T CS after dealing with Orange! They are so helpful and efficient, a pleasure to deal with.

Having got the free music streaming for 6 months from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/domore/default.mspx and with T-Mob's TV it looks like I'll be streaming data and with my Athena I want HSDPA and will prob use IM now so, although I might be able to do it all on the basic package, I'd rather pay a bit extra and do it within the terms of my package!

I must admit, I've had no problems with my lowly W&W standard and the built in MSN Messenger on the few occasions I do use it mobile (working fine right this minute...)

I was wondering if this could be related to their fannying about with their systems whilst trying to problem-solve the T-Mobile TV issues they've been having?

Hi folks, just checked MSN and streaming radio, both working fine.
