Is anybody taking preorders for this phone? I couldn't find anything on Expansys' website.

Expansys were, then took the page down. Paul is working on a deal with them at the moment. Otheres including Clove, EasyDevices and DeviceWire are taking pre-orders.

Does the HTC branded phone have American 3G? Or will I have to wait for T-Mobile or ATT to come out with their versions?

i am really thinking to get the kaiser, but i have serious problem with the implementation of the cam.

it has no cover, nothing like a flash and it becomes dusty inside (because of the strange full-size back cover). i do not understand, that a large comany is able to implement such a sh!t. i can't be that difficult to offer a little flash (at least a bright led or something) and it is unacceptable, that the camera and the back are two parts, so that dust can come between it.

the cam in an mobile phone is for quickshots (more than every digital camera). who wants to remove the backside, clean all lenses, but the backside back and then take a "quickshot".

calm down there buddy, considering this phone pretty much does everything else except make your coffee, don't hate on HTC. the low light shots that Paul gave us earlier show that it might not be necessary for a flash. the definitive answer will be if he shows us some pub shots to see if it will actually capture people's faces in the dark.

I have already sugessted a solution to the dust problem. we'll see if it works when we get our phones or if Paul decides to try it himself.

Phone first, PDA second, Camera Third. I think they've done pretty well on the first 2 considering only a handful of people in the world have this phone so far.

Phone flashes are ALWAYS crap without exception in my experience, I would rather it took half decent shots without it personally!

The dust problem could be fixed before release, and it's not THAT much of a problem.

i am not upset, but i do not understand htc for not offering a good an clean solution. it is not that difficult.

although i am german i love the pub culture in england (like the whole country itself), but there are situations, where a flash is really helpful. i just do not understand, where the problem is, to offer a flash or a dust-free lense. a lensecover would not be that difficult either, but this seems to more than one could expect.

i am not a fanboy of either brand and i am really interested in my first wm6 phone. but i do not want to see any mistakes/problems like the ones with the camera. they are soooooo easy to solve, so why should a manufacturer release a phone with them?

I have to say he's got a point. Paul: Have you tried the flash on the K800i? It's REALLY good, not like the weak led "flashes" in other phones. Perfect for boozy nights out :)

If the Kaiser had one of those, i'd be over the moon. It is quite frustrating when manufacturers produce models that have one killer feature missing.

My only main gripe with the Kaiser is the lack of a proper flash (better video recording would be nice), but it's still head and shoulders above everything else on the market atm imo.

;) :D :D

This is going to be the phone that breaks my 10 year avoidance of mobiles - because it seems to combine all the gadgets in one package. With one exception a flash. The phone is going to replace my 2mp Nikon Coolpix 2000, my mp3, my old gps ... and its a mobile/cell as well :)

Oh and flash is only any good close up - just get the lighting behind you. Try doing it in low lite in the temples of Karnak and you discover its better to go during the day time

Cmon if there were nothing they could improve on then there would nothing to look forward to next year. :P

Yes the k800i flash is brilliant but it's also quite large and considering how much they've packed into such a small device already, i'm not that bothered. At least it takes picture in the light, which is more than can be said about my HTC Wizard!!

I can't wait for this phone :) I'm just praying o2 UK will bring it out.

Oh yeah don't get me wrong, i'm buying it! :)

well it depends which version of the phone your talking about. FCC made it sound like the US version will probably be a mid septamber release, and the htc version will probably be a little before that.

the htc version I want to get cause my gf is in hongkong now and will be leaving at the end of aug... so hopefully it comes out b4 that lol... also lol this might be a dumb question but for whoever has tested this device would u get a screen protector for it so it doesnt get scratched in ur pocket i had one on my sx66 and it worked perfect just wondering if it is necessary for the kaiser

Here's 3 sets of EXTREMELY low light pictures. Not just low light, REALLY low light.

In each set, the first is taken in 'Auto' mode, the second in 'Night' mode.

P

PS Yes, there's a bug in this build which puts photos in the wrong orientation :P

Blimey there were quite a lot of posts in the last 24+ hours. Sorry to go back to the topic of the low light photos that Paul took (page 30), but I think if anything the photos taken in 'Auto' mode look better (more natural) than the 'Night' mode. Anyone else agree?

I also agree that badbandit and siksik6 have got a fair point with respect to a descent flash. Although I must admit, I'm happy that at least it can now take a descent photo (now that it has auto focus) relative to the TyTN/Hermes/Vario II/M3100.

...And the fact that it has in-built GPS, more memory, a tilting screen, etc. relative to its predecessor, means that I definitely want to upgrade my M3100 for this device.

Keep up the good work Paul - hundreds/thousands of us appreciate it. ;)

And finally, apologies in advance (as they're not really about the Kaiser), but can someone help me with my 2 queries below:

1. Paul, you talk about TCPMP, I'm probably being dumb, what program is this? i.e. what does TCPMP stand for? And where can I get it from?

2. Could someone please point me in the right direction as to how to install additional codecs (namely H.264, AVC1 in oder to play mp4 & m4v files in BetaPlayer on my M3100)

Cheers,

Tilum

yes i agree with you, the auto mode does look better, the only reason i had requested a night mode picture was just for that reason, to see the quality and see how bright it is.

TCPMP stands for The Core Pocket Media Player

http://picard.exceed.hu/tcpmp/test/

it plays pretty much every video format out there, and now supports the format of youtube videos!

If you switch over to TCPMP from BetaPlayer you will find that it already plays all of the codecs you requested, you can download them there at the site i linked.

Not quite the same effect...

Paul If your still in a picture taking mood could you take some more comparison low light pics, but this time 1 picture taken with the kaiser, and the other picture taken with a phone with a crappy low light camera? the C600 for example? that way some of us could REALLY see the difference. :)

Ouch! I just cancelled my Pre-order with MobilePlanet. Ok, I knew up front that the price was high to begin with but I just got an e-mail that they will have to start charging sales tax in my state (as of Aug. 1st) so that would have added another $70.00+. If Paul's deal will pan out for us in the US, then of course, I can jump on that deal. If not, has anyone ever had any experience with Elite Electronics in Florida? They seem to offer the cheapest pre-order price of $799.95 (where MobilePlanet is now $864.95 + tax).

I really want to be an "early-adopter" especially since AT&T probably won't offer the phone for months (if history plays any part or the Qualcom issue).

Speaking of the Qualcom issue, these online stores in the US that offer pre-ordering don't seem to be affected...or is it just a ploy???

I thought the Qualcomm issue is over and FCC approved it?

Hi Paul,

I was wondering if you ever did the Core Media Player test of Matrix Reloaded??

Thanks,

Got to agree with Paul on this one. I used to use screen protectors but they're not really needed if you are careful. I tend to keep my device in a pocket on its own (ie no coins or keys etc) and generally its fine. If you are going to get one though, I would suggest the slightly more expensive type (i think made by brando). They are VERY clear.

maybe we can do a search before asking questions that have been answered through reviews and others asking. At this point there are a lot of excited people waiting for this device. The least newbies can do when wondering something is to do a quick search or at least read a few pages. The knowlegable here have better things to do than answer the same question 10 different ways...like finding out new information for the rest of us!

This is one of the most tactful forums i've encountered. some of the repetitive questions from this thread would have gotten newbies flamed off the forum or a very harsh reply from veterans. both good and bad i suppose. there's a certain etiquette that should be followed for internet forums, its a shame that they are not followed by many.

A week's a long time in football . . . I mean in forums.

Been away for a week and 100,000 views, 33 pages - amazing - well done Paul + team.

As a Newbie, to avoid asking repetitive questions: is the Search facilities able to find specific words in this forum - as everytime I have tried I get an error - probably my poor ICT skills!

The long way would be to trawl through all 33+ pages - but my (sorry if it's been answered) question: does the keyboard light up - couldn't spot the "sensor" as per the Vario II.

Apologies again from a newbie up North.

Hi All,

Just got an update from Expansys.nl. the Dutch site states "Woensdag 5 September" So presumably we should be seeing the kaiser by the first week of September. 1 month to go....
