Guest Paul (MVP) Posted August 6, 2007 Report Posted August 6, 2007 Have you ever actually used TMC? It's a bit crap really... I wonder if TomTom's GPRS based traffic info is perhaps a better option? P I thought this was the device I was waiting for BUT, it doesnt have TMC to enable routing software to avoid (UK) traffic jams... Is there any way to supply TMC to the device - Bluetooth, accessory etc like there is with some Garmin/Tom Tom devices etc where you can add a TMC antenna/receiver. I want a combined Phone/PDA/GPS(with TMC) onto which I can install Navigon (for routing, also includes TMC subs in UK) and Memory Map for walking map/chart use. The ETEN M700 was my hope as it has GPS & TMC but seems not to be compatible with Navigon. I would buy a TyTN II / P4550 if I could somehow get TMC as well... Any ideas?
Guest bigodel Posted August 6, 2007 Report Posted August 6, 2007 YEEEEESS I ve read all the posts of the thread and I ve only one thing to say: the thread is as unbelievable as the kaiser (or the TYTN II)
Guest Mike W Posted August 6, 2007 Report Posted August 6, 2007 Have you ever actually used TMC? It's a bit crap really... I wonder if TomTom's GPRS based traffic info is perhaps a better option? P I haven't so didn't know that GPRS could be better. I had just assumed TMC using FM or GPRS was the delivery method for the same data, with Tom Tom GPRS method costing more in Tom Tom PLus subs and frequent data calls, whereas TMC would be free of running costs. I realise it's off-topic but what's wrong with TMC. Maybe then the P4550 not having it wouldn't be so much of an issue...
Guest clarkster Posted August 6, 2007 Report Posted August 6, 2007 Hi Paul, Can we get some video action or screenshots of home screen (all tabs), comm manager with their new looks, feel. Thanks
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted August 6, 2007 Report Posted August 6, 2007 The problem with TMC is that the bandwidth over FM is very limited. In my experience this means the traffic data is generally quite low in quality and detail, and i've also found it to slow to be updated. I have used TMC on mobile devices before, and am on my second car with TMC integrated navigation. I'm not saying that there's necessarily anything better, just that there is a lot of potential for being more effective than TMC :) P

UK Delivery = £3.95 Subtotal = £36.90 10% discount on item with code 'BMC 4201' (courtesy of RetailMeNot) = -£3.29 Total = £33.61, and they take PayPal too! Huzzah! :P P PS Hope they actually ship it! :)
Guest chingf0rd Posted August 6, 2007 Report Posted August 6, 2007 (edited) I never understood why people say "I can't be bothered to charge it every night". I sleep with my phone on my bed side table, with the charger. When I go to sleep, and it needs charging, I plug it in. If the kaiser needs charging once a day to power its amazing capabilties, that is what I will do. :) Fine. All I wanted to know was some sort of guideline as to how long the thing lasts on battery power. Never mind. If this is the super device that we all crave, I hope the battery stacks up well (unlike some N95s that I know of...). Looking forward to the release anyway. Edited August 6, 2007 by chingf0rd
Guest AwJm Posted August 6, 2007 Report Posted August 6, 2007 (edited) Paul, i notice that the soft keys on the keyboard are bulit into R/T & I/O Does it hinder typing, do you find yourself bumping into the softkeys by mistake ??? Edited August 6, 2007 by AwJm
Guest whoster69 Posted August 6, 2007 Report Posted August 6, 2007 Well, I went and played the 8525 (same form factor as the Kaiser) for about 20 minutes in an AT&T store and I have to say, I thought I was going to go blind if I starred at it much longer. The fonts are so small (as is the screen). Is there any way to improve this? This could be a deal breaker for me getting the Kaiser. I've been trying to decide between the Kaiser and the X7501 Advantage, but right now I think I'll gladly take the extra size/weight of the Advantage just so I can read the screen.
Guest mikeeey Posted August 6, 2007 Report Posted August 6, 2007 (edited) I do, i'll take a shot with the C600 later. Maybe with my EOS 350D too, just for fun :P P haha sounds good. it will show us users with bad low light filter cameras how great the kaiser's camera really is. EDIT: oops i had not realized there were a few pages of posts ahead of me, and you already posted the picture, give me a minute to catch up :) Edited August 6, 2007 by mikeeey
Guest Shuflie Posted August 6, 2007 Report Posted August 6, 2007 Excellent thread Paul. Thanks for keeping everyone updated on this great machine. If I may ask a tech question since I do not seem to find detailed specs on the issue: Does the Kaiser support the HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) specification? HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) is for sure supported I think the answer you are looking for is in the first post, both HSDPA and HSUPA are supported. By the way, almost 2 years until you make your first post? I hope Paul wasn't going to make you wait so long for an answer. :)

Paul, hope you can confirm that there is a solution to the font size issue, because that is an issue that also matters for me (and many others, I assume).
Guest mikeeey Posted August 6, 2007 Report Posted August 6, 2007 As requested, i've taken 6 pictures in various states of lighting on my Kaiser and C600, and posted below. All pictures on the Kaiser are taken in standard settings, full auto mode. The C600 pictures are taken in standard settings (latest Orange ROM), with auto mode for the first 4, and night mode for the last 2. All pictures are kaiser first, C600 second. All pictures are resized down for ease of posting... you get the idea :) The results surprised me! P thanks for taking these pics paul. were you using CoolCamera on your C600 or htc camera?
Guest clarkster Posted August 6, 2007 Report Posted August 6, 2007 Not sure how this affects the US versions, but Qualcomm ban is still in place for the US apparently http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/06/us-prez...rizon-snickers/

Guest clarkster Posted August 7, 2007 Report Posted August 7, 2007 Hi Paul, Any ideas if this will be able to be updated to WM7 like the TyTn was to WM6?? Thanks
Guest Rui Duarte Posted August 7, 2007 Report Posted August 7, 2007 Hello, Paul! Thank you for all the information on this wonderful Kaiser / TyTN II. I know it's been asked earlier (and answered by you), but are you sure it won't have the TouchFLO interface as seen on the HTC Touch? What are they talking about then on http://msmobiles.com/news.php/6595.html ? Either way, I'm anxiously waiting to buy one to replace my aging iPAQ hw6515! :) Greetings from sunny Portugal :P Rui

Guest Webreaper Posted August 7, 2007 Report Posted August 7, 2007 Any ideas if this will be able to be updated to WM7 like the TyTn was to WM6?? Jeez, there's some really noise on this thread. Daft questions like this, and people posting how great this thread is!?!? Can we all just calm down? It's a phone for christ's sake. :) WM6 is only just out, and very few devices have had official upgrades. WM7 isn't anywhere near being available from MS yest, nor expected until early 2009 - by which time the devices available will be completely different (and probably all with iPhone-style GUIs :P).
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted August 7, 2007 Report Posted August 7, 2007 Er, they are seperate keys in their own right in fact? P Paul, i notice that the soft keys on the keyboard are bulit into R/T & I/O Does it hinder typing, do you find yourself bumping into the softkeys by mistake ???
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted August 7, 2007 Report Posted August 7, 2007 I don't find this at all, but you can increase the font size in the 'Screen' settings applet. P Well, I went and played the 8525 (same form factor as the Kaiser) for about 20 minutes in an AT&T store and I have to say, I thought I was going to go blind if I starred at it much longer.
