Guest mikeeey Posted August 15, 2007 Report Posted August 15, 2007 Incorrect - they did disable it, as documented by Qualcomm, by connecting some of the GPS pins together. Feel free to read the gory details in the reverse engineering thread here. If they hadn't, people would have stuck their own antennas in the casing :) They could also just get a high resolution map and get the coordinates for buildings to fly in to. Again, not much difference. I guess the FlightSim GPS change was a knee-jerk reaction to the "omgz! Terrorists everywhere!" outcry at the time. Not helped by a reporter showing that you could crash in to the twin towers in FlightSim. But I'm pretty sure that they won't disable GPS, it wouldn't make a worthwhile upgrade if they did that. nah they wont. after i had posted that paul got the AT&T rom and it does include GPS. so we dont need to worry :P
Guest kathryncheng Posted August 15, 2007 Report Posted August 15, 2007 hello Paul, Iam quite new with this 3G thing... has it got a bandwith like gsm? if so .. is there a difference between the US 8925 and Kaiser in Europe when it comes to 3G bandwith usability? many thanks, dennis

Guest ForTheLose Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 MoDaCo branded units would be very very very unlikely unless we could place a HUGE order! P Well, either way, will US people get to buy these units, with the unlockedness and such? or do we have to go through at&t and liberate a htc rom? :)
Guest matt sb Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 Well, either way, will US people get to buy these units, with the unlockedness and such? or do we have to go through at&t and liberate a htc rom? :) Hello, Paul, I read the entire 62 pages of this thread tonight. Quite a level of interest in this baby for sure. I have a couple questions that I could not find answered anywhere else. First, I need to buy this device to hook up with my company's Goodlink server. My question is, if I buy the HTC unlocked version rather than the AT&T one, do you know if I would have any problems hooking it up? Related to the first question, I can't really see any other downside to purchasing the HTC version. Assuming price is no object, is it safe to say that the HTC version is better overall? The stuff that AT&T adds on seems to be mostly minor addons. Finally, I saw a suggestion somewhere that an HTC unit purchased overseas might not work in the US due to the patent dispute. I realize this may require a lawyer to answer, but has anyone determined whether use of the device on a US network would be restricted? Thanks for the amazing amount of detail. Regards from California.

Regards from California. I can probably answer some of these: 1. This should depend on the OS, not the carrier (or carrier crapware) - ask Goodlink if they support WM6. 2. The HTC version is a lot nicer (home screen plugin, etc. Not locked to one network). AT&T version is the stripped down version with some demos installed (and carrier crapware). 3. It would work in the US IF you could get it into the country due to the patent dispute. It has something to do with the ability to import devices using the chipset that HTC seems to be using with all their upcomers. AT&T plus Verizon, etc are paying Broadcom IP fees instead of waiting for Qualcomm to do it (which sounds like they won't yet). - read more here http://www.wmexperts.com/articles/verizon_..._run_aroun.html Edited August 17, 2007 by clarkster

Guest Rowdy.nl Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 Not sure if this has been covered already and applogise if it has; Will the Kaiser if it is released on Orange be able to support Line 2 fully or at all? I love my M3100 now it has WM6 on it but lack of line 2 means I have to swap to my N73 to use for outgoing.... (Diverted for incoming). Thanks in advance.... This news message (in dutch, sorry) states that Orange pulls the plug on the SPV. They will selling the unbranded HTC phones in the future. Hopefully also for the Kaiser... :)

They will selling the unbranded HTC phones in the future. Hopefully also for the Kaiser... :) Hi Rowdy.nl I'm afraid I wouldn't raise your hopes up too much. Although it may be a HTC-branded device, the phone will still be SIM-locked to Orange, and the ROM will still be customized for Orange's software and services. So it may lack the outer SPV-branding, but I'm guessing little else will change (sadly). Kind regards

So that isn't a problem. And if you take a plan and buy the device in a shop, you can ask them to remove the sim lock for you. They did it last week for my girlfriend. Just say that you also want to use another sim and there's no problem there... :) The main thing I wanted to point out is that you don't get the (in my opinion) ugly T-Mobile look, or the lack of features. (because there are three configs available)
Guest Special2k3 Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 I'd like to order the kaiser today at expansys germany. Does anybody know if it is possible to cancel the order before they send the kaiser when i find a faster possibility to get my hands on the device? Special2k3
Guest Kchrpm Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 (edited) You'd be better off asking someone at Expansys via e-mail so that you have a record of whatever their answer is. Someone pointed out, I believe in this thread, that though their policy states they will ask you to confirm you still want the item you pre-ordered before they ship it, they did not do that on his G900 pre-order. It's always better to get the official word in an official form than to ask a 3rd party who would just be guessing :) Edited August 16, 2007 by Kchrpm

Guest Nick72 Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 Paul, Been reading Modaco for a while and particularly this thread from the beginning. Like has been said before, good work, keep it up. This question hasn't to my knowledge been asked, apologies to the thread police if it has... I have a Vario and if I go underground (London Underground, not pot-hole'ing or in my mancave, etc), when I resurface it often takes ages for my Vario to find a signal, which can be a real annoyance. A colleague has the Vario II and he says that it's alright but can sometimes take a while. So, I was wondering whether you'd noticed how long it takes to find a signal in this situation, not from being turned on, but from when a signal is lost from going underground or somewhere...? Cheers, Nick.
Guest Kchrpm Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 What is line 2? 2 phone numbers on one SIM card?
Guest intokkabire Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 Hi Everyone. I have been following this thread since it was only 2 pages long and boy has it been great. There has been alot of great information shared and I can't wait to get my hands on the Kaiser. Paul, thanks for feeding us all this great information. Here is some new info coming from Boy Genius: If there was any doubt in your minds whatsoever, this should alleviate that. Paul from MoDaCo tell us that both the AT&T and HTC Kaiser, Tilt, 8925 (or whatever you want to call it) ROMs are now finalized and the device should be ready to go. They’ve got a whole slew of screenshots right from the device, and boy does it look good! On another note, one of our HTC contacts has informed us that AT&T will actually be the first to get the device, instead of HTC distributing their version to resellers first. AT&T, we love you, you are killing it!http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2007/08/16/...it-personality/
Guest NuShrike Posted August 17, 2007 Report Posted August 17, 2007 The hype heard 'round the world is working in the seller's favor! Elite-Electronix has raised their pre-order price from USD $799.95 to $819.95... The release date is still Thursday, Sept. 9, 2007... I'm sure they know that they will still get plenty of buyers especially with all of the "good news" surrounding our favorite new phone. They're back to listing USD $799.95 for Thursday, Sept. 6, 2007.
Guest ScrewlooseAZ Posted August 17, 2007 Report Posted August 17, 2007 I have also had brief sight of the AT&T Kaiser prototype, which had the usual suite of additional applications such as MusicID, Video, Music etc. Okay so you said you saw it. Did it have two cameras or not? Us here in the USA really want to know.
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted August 17, 2007 Report Posted August 17, 2007 It did, but it was the generic Kaiser prototype, so I wouldn't infer too much from that. P Okay so you said you saw it. Did it have two cameras or not? Us here in the USA really want to know.

My best guess is that he means conference calling? Someone at the dutch forum I spend much time on, talked to a representative of HTC and confirmed to him that the Kaiser will be available in the dutch shops in the first week of september. There are shops taking preorders in the netherlands for as much as €699. And also one that takes pre-orders in combination with plans for the dutch networks. With my current provider/plan it'll cost me €339... Can't wait... :)
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted August 17, 2007 Report Posted August 17, 2007 No word whether the P4550 will support Line 2. While snooping around in the registry I did see some keys that mentioned ALS (the technical name for Line 2), but that doesn't necessarily mean it'll work! I don't have a Line 2 enabled SIM unfortunately. P
Guest loomastic Posted August 17, 2007 Report Posted August 17, 2007 I'm starting to feel physically ill by waiting for this phone. Such a hate/love relationship right now :) Hopefully it'll be all love later... I really hope an early-september release is realistic, but I'm set for a late-september release here in sweden :P. I wouldn't mind beeing positively surprised though...
