Standard headset connection problems

Hi

I have a T-Mobile Vario II with all settings as it came out of the box.

My headset has stopped working. I assumed it was a problem with the headset, so I purchased a replacement which again doesn't work.

When the headset is plugged in the Vario II doesn't appear to notice - and sound still comes out of the main phone speakers.

However the USB socket still works for connecting to my computer for ActiveSync etc.

Any idea what the problem is and are there any solutions?

If not can I buy some alternative (bluetooth?) device for listening to music etc. on?
