GPRS Compression on WM6?

Was playing with the GPRS connection settings on the train this morning, and, and noticed that under 'Advanced' settings there is a 'software compression' checkbox which is unchecked. So I checked it, and it didn't break anything. ;)

Anyone know whether this has any effect, and if so whether it does what it suggests? If so it could save a fair bit in data costs (and speed things up too). I guess it has to be carrier-supported (I'm on O2)?

BTW, while I'm here, can I also make the observation that I find it shocking that despite working near St Paul's, and commuting all the way in from Surrey, I've not actually seen any 3G coverage yet. Saw the 3G logo flicker for a second, and the E logo light up just outside waterloo, but otherwise GPRS all the way. I hope Voda's high-speed data coverage is better when my number ports next Monday!!

That's probably the "request PPP compression" you see in Windows. PPP has the option to support it, but both sides have to allow it.

At least for me at&t's servers don't, but I get around that a little with my own Apache caching proxy running compression.
