Guest sc0user_75 Posted October 11, 2007 Report Posted October 11, 2007 Guys I tried to stream some radio just now, but no luck. I went into www.virginradio.co.uk (as was advised by the Virgin website for streaming to Mobile) but couldnt pick anything up. Any tips please?
Guest Howard Moon Posted October 11, 2007 Report Posted October 11, 2007 I'd be quite interested in hearing from people about this too. I was considering developing a PPC client for Last.fm but I wasn't sure if 3G was fast enough.
Guest sc0user_75 Posted October 11, 2007 Report Posted October 11, 2007 Howard, a quick bit of info for you mate. I finally managed to get into Virgin radio. It opens up in Windows Media Player. The quality of the stream is not great, but it gets me by in the drone of annoying voices at work ;) On the top left of the WMP screen there is a message saying 26kbps. I don't know if this means 26kbps per minute or per second. But which ever, would this be OK to use on basic web n walk? Or will i get a dirty bill at the end of the month??? Erm, nothing else I can think of that could be of any more use.....

I stream various stations on my train journey in the morning (Capital, LBC etc) very good quality on 3G. 26 kilo bits per second. Capital streams >96kbps on 3G * 4 kbit/s – minimum achieved for encoding recognizable speech (using special-purpose speech codecs) * 8 kbit/s – telephone quality * 32 kbit/s – MW quality * 96 kbit/s – FM quality * 192 kbit/s – Nearly CD quality for a file compressed in the MP3 format * 1,411 kbit/s – CD audio (at 16-bits for each channel and 44.1 kHz) Edited October 11, 2007 by flashflash

He said "yes" and even if I were to go over the limit once or twice not to worry too much as t mobile would not charge me, but would instead send me a letter warning me of the usage. I sincerely hope what he told me is true as Ive just been listening to Virgin all afternoon!!!!

I quickly checked the terms & Conditions and it looks like streaming media is now included in the basic W&W package. So W&W plus only gets you PC modem connectivity and Instant messaging (Which t-mob told me includes Push Mail)
Guest Howard Moon Posted October 11, 2007 Report Posted October 11, 2007 Sweet... I think I'll start looking at developing a Last.fm client as soon as I get some free time ;)
Guest sc0user_75 Posted October 11, 2007 Report Posted October 11, 2007 Well, the Virgin Radio stream is quite sh1te. It loses reception every-so-often, and you are given this weird voiced message asking you to check all your connections! Howard, would it be a lot to ask if you could have a go at doing a Virgin Radio client too ;)

Guest sc0user_75 Posted October 11, 2007 Report Posted October 11, 2007 Dolbe, looked at it, and am currently condsidering buying the Resco Suite (which includes explorer) BUt first I need to justify the cost... having already bought Missing Sync... and soon Phone Alarm ;)
Guest hicks Posted October 11, 2007 Report Posted October 11, 2007 The BBC radio feeds all work very nicely in Real Player on my VIII. To save fishing around the BBC site on my phone I browsed to the various stations, played the station, hit the "play in standalone player" button then saved the .ram file onto my phone. Resco radio also works well. Oddly I'm sure I'm only on basic W&W, but streaming from BB, and using the Orb plugin for winamp to stream from my home PC to my phone, AND using Live messenger all work just fine.

Another plus benefit maybe ;)
Guest fusi Posted October 12, 2007 Report Posted October 12, 2007 I'd be quite interested in hearing from people about this too. I was considering developing a PPC client for Last.fm but I wasn't sure if 3G was fast enough. afaik last.fm are working on a player themselves right now
Guest ginnermark Posted October 12, 2007 Report Posted October 12, 2007 Better than that (and slightly off topic) - how about live streaming of News 24? Copy the following URLs to your machine and make them favourites in IE. Launch them from there... http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsa/n5ctrl/tvseq/n2...o/news24_bb.asx is the full broadband stream - works over WIFI really well (and sometimes over 3G) and http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsa/n5ctrl/tvseq/n2...o/news24_nb.asx is the narrowband stream, might be more suitable for general mobile use. Oh, this is the weather http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsa/n5ctrl/summarie...ather_uk_nb.asx
Guest GeekGrrl Posted October 12, 2007 Report Posted October 12, 2007 (edited) Anyone tried LobsterTunes yet? http://www.lobstertunes.com Uses media sharing so you can listen to your home music library, and has radio and tv streams built in as well. Edited October 12, 2007 by GeekGrrl
Guest lozzd Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 afaik last.fm are working on a player themselves right now No, we're not, which is annoying, because I want one. That reminds me, must nag the client team...
